Finding stability in God when shaky?
How can we find stability in God when feeling like a "tottering fence"?

Feeling Unsteady: The Image of the Tottering Fence

Psalm 62:3 describes people poised to topple David “like a leaning wall, a tottering fence.” When life feels that fragile, God’s Word shows how to exchange instability for steadfast security.

Recognizing the Source of Stability

Psalm 62:1–2: “In God alone my soul finds rest; my salvation comes from Him. He alone is my rock and my salvation; He is my fortress, I will never be shaken.”

• Stability is not self-generated; it is rooted in God’s unchanging character.

• The literal promise—“I will never be shaken”—flows directly from God’s role as Rock, Salvation, and Fortress.

Resting, Not Striving

• Verse 1: “My soul finds rest in God alone.”

• “Rest” translates a Hebrew word for silence or stillness—choosing to stop frantic self-rescue and instead trust the One who has already secured deliverance (cf. Exodus 14:13–14).

Isaiah 30:15: “In repentance and rest is your salvation, in quietness and trust is your strength.”

Anchoring the Heart in God’s Character

• Rock (Psalm 62:2): immovable strength.

• Salvation: complete, present-tense rescue.

• Fortress: high, defended position; adversaries cannot breach God’s protection (cf. Proverbs 18:10).

Practices That Plant the Feet Firmly

1. Abide in Scripture

Romans 10:17—faith grows by hearing the Word; feeding on Truth solidifies the soul.

2. Speak Truth to the Soul

Psalm 42:11—David addresses his own heart; preaching God’s promises to oneself steadies emotions.

3. Persistent Prayerful Waiting

Psalm 62:5—“Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from Him.” Waiting focuses attention on God’s timetable and faithfulness.

4. Remember Past Deliverances

1 Samuel 17:37—David recalled the lion and the bear before facing Goliath; recounting God’s history with you breeds confidence.

5. Join Faith-Building Fellowship

Hebrews 10:24–25—gathering with believers encourages perseverance and reminds us we are not solitary fences buffeted by the wind.

Warnings Against False Foundations

Psalm 62:9–10 cautions against trusting human power, oppression, or riches.

Matthew 7:24–27: only the house built on the rock of Christ’s words withstands storms.

The Unshakable Promise

Hebrews 6:19—“We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure.”

• When God anchors, no accusation, failure, or upheaval can sever the line (Romans 8:38–39).

Living the Reality

• Stability isn’t an abstract concept; it is the daily experience of souls resting on the literal, unfailing promises of Scripture.

• As Psalm 62:8 exhorts, “Trust in Him at all times, O people; pour out your hearts before Him. God is our refuge.”

With hearts anchored to the Rock, the tottering fence becomes a fortified wall—steady, upright, and secure in every gust of life’s wind.
