Herod's inquiry: inspire Gospel sharing?
How does Herod's inquiry in Luke 9:9 inspire us to share the Gospel?

The Stirring Question

“ ‘I beheaded John,’ Herod said, ‘but who is this of whom I hear such things?’ And he kept trying to see Jesus.” (Luke 9:9)

Herod’s single, unsettled question shows how the very mention of Jesus compels attention. That royal curiosity still urges believers to speak so others may seek the Savior for themselves.

What Herod Teaches Us about Gospel Witness

• The name of Jesus provokes interest—sometimes even from unlikely people.

• Reports about Christ traveled so widely that a king could not ignore them; faithful testimony still works that way (Romans 10:17).

• Herod’s guilt over John’s execution could not quiet his need for answers; the Gospel addresses every conscience (John 16:8).

• Though his motives were mixed, Herod’s pursuit underscores that people will search for truth when they hear enough to make them wonder (Acts 17:32).

• God used common rumors to draw a ruler’s attention; He uses our everyday conversations the same way (2 Corinthians 5:20).

Why Our Words Matter

1. They spread Christ’s reputation so others ask, “Who is this?” (Luke 9:9).

2. They prepare hearts for a personal encounter with Him (John 12:21).

3. They fulfill the Lord’s design that faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:14–15).

4. They keep Jesus—rather than cultural noise—in the public square (Acts 4:20).

Practical Ways to Spark Herod-like Curiosity Today

• Weave brief, natural references to what Jesus is doing in your life into ordinary talk.

• Share Scripture—one clear verse can linger in a listener’s mind (Hebrews 4:12).

• Tell true stories of answered prayer; they raise the question, “Who made that happen?”

• Carry Gospel literature or send a link after conversations; Herod “kept trying to see” because he had heard enough to keep looking.

• Live consistently so your conduct backs your words (Philippians 2:15-16).

Encouragement from Other Scriptures

1 Peter 3:15—“Always be prepared to give a defense to everyone who asks you the reason for the hope you possess.”

Matthew 10:27—“What I tell you in the dark, speak in the light; what is whispered in your ear, proclaim from the housetops.”

John 1:45-46—Philip’s simple witness stirred Nathanael’s skeptical curiosity, which Jesus answered personally.

Herod’s unsettled query reminds us that when believers faithfully talk about Jesus, even hardened hearts can be moved to seek—and Christ stands ready to be found.

In what ways can we actively seek to 'see Him' in our lives?
