How can we ask God to protect us?
In what ways can we seek God's help against those who "seek my life"?

Facing the Threat: “Those who seek my life”

“May all who seek my life be ashamed and confounded; may those who wish me harm be driven back and disgraced.” (Psalm 40:14)

The psalmist’s cry is more than poetic language; it is the literal plea of a believer pursued by hostile people. Scripture shows us how to seek God’s help when opposition feels deadly.

Call Out Boldly to the Lord

• Follow David’s pattern—“O God, arrogant men rise against me; a band of ruthless men seeks my life” (Psalm 86:14). Name the danger without softening it.

• Ask for specific intervention:

– Shame and confound the attackers (Psalm 70:2).

– Frustrate their schemes (Psalm 38:12).

– Preserve your life for His purposes (Psalm 143:11).

Anchor Yourself in His Promises

• God is a refuge: “He is my fortress, my God, in whom I trust” (Psalm 91:2).

• He will not forsake His servants: “But the Lord is faithful, and He will strengthen you and guard you from the evil one” (2 Thessalonians 3:3).

• Vengeance belongs to Him, not to us (Romans 12:19); He will repay perfectly.

Keep Walking in Integrity

Even under threat, Scripture calls us to righteous choices.

• Refuse retaliation—entrust justice to the Lord.

• Maintain truthful speech; do not answer slander with slander.

• Continue good works so that “your good behavior in Christ may put them to shame” (1 Peter 3:16).

Fortify Your Mind with the Word

• Memorize protection passages (Psalm 27; Psalm 91).

• Speak them aloud when fear rises; Scripture is both shield and sword (Ephesians 6:17).

Seek Shelter in Worship

• Sing of God’s steadfast love (Psalm 59:16); worship shifts focus from threat to the Throne.

• Praise marks territory that the enemy cannot occupy with fear.

Rally Godly Support

• David had Jonathan, Elijah had Elisha—share the burden with believers who will intercede.

• Corporate prayer invites multiplied faith (Matthew 18:19-20).

Wait Expectantly

• “I waited patiently for the LORD; He inclined to me” (Psalm 40:1).

• Expect Him to act in His timing; waiting is not passive but trust in action.

Live in the Confidence of Christ’s Victory

• The cross and empty tomb assure ultimate deliverance; no enemy can outlast the risen Lord (Colossians 2:15).

• Your life is “hidden with Christ in God” (Colossians 3:3); safety is finally secured in Him.

When foes “seek your life,” Scripture invites you to cry out, cling to God’s promises, walk uprightly, wield the Word, worship, gather allies, and wait with confidence. The God who rescued David still answers today.
