How can we bring joy to fellow believers?
In what ways can we be a source of joy to fellow believers?

A Word from Philemon: Joy and Refreshment

“Yes, brother, let me have joy from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ.” (Philemon 1:20)

Paul pictures a believer who can brighten another’s spirit in tangible, Christ–centered ways. The calling is not abstract; it is a daily, deliberate ministry we can all pursue.

Practical Pathways to Bring Joy

• Speak life-giving words that build up rather than tear down (Ephesians 4:29).

• Offer quick forgiveness and seek reconciliation, mirroring Christ’s grace (Colossians 3:13).

• Meet material or emotional needs with generous, sacrificial love (Proverbs 11:25; Romans 12:13).

• Show hospitality—opening home, table, and schedule (1 Peter 4:9).

• Share spiritual victories and struggles, fostering honest fellowship (James 5:16).

• Pray faithfully for others and let them know you are interceding (Philippians 1:4).

• Celebrate obedience and growth in fellow believers (3 John 1:4).

• Bear burdens together, refusing to let anyone walk alone (Galatians 6:2).

Refreshing Through Encouragement

“Therefore we are encouraged. In addition to our own encouragement, we were especially delighted to see how happy Titus was, because his spirit has been refreshed by all of you.” (2 Corinthians 7:13)

A timely note, call, or text can revive a weary heart. Simple acknowledgments—“I see Christ in you,” “Your faith encouraged me today”—echo Paul’s desire in Philemon.

Refreshing Through Forgiveness and Reconciliation

Philemon was asked to welcome Onesimus back “no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a beloved brother” (Philemon 1:16). Extending grace where there has been offense turns potential bitterness into shared joy.

Refreshing Through Generosity and Service

“Share with the saints who are in need. Practice hospitality.” (Romans 12:13)

Hands-on help—meals prepared, errands run, funds provided—translates gospel love into daily life and sends a surge of joy through the body.

Refreshing Through Faithful Walk

“How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy we experience before our God because of you?” (1 Thessalonians 3:9)

A consistent, obedient life encourages others to persevere. Simply walking in truth lifts hearts.

The Ripple Effect of Refreshing Hearts

• Joy multiplies—those refreshed turn and refresh others (Proverbs 11:25).

• Unity deepens—the church becomes “knit together in love” (Colossians 2:2).

• Christ is exalted—“so that by God’s will I may come to you with joy and together with you be refreshed” (Romans 15:32).

Seize the moment today—offer a word, extend forgiveness, share a resource, stand with a burdened friend—and become the kind of believer Paul longed for: one who “refreshes hearts in Christ.”
