How can we cease harm today?
In what ways can we "stop doing evil" in today's society?

The Foundational Verse

“Wash yourselves and be clean. Remove your evil deeds from My sight. Stop doing evil!” (Isaiah 1:16)

Understand What God Calls Evil

• Compare every attitude, word, and action with Scripture (Psalm 119:11; 2 Timothy 3:16-17).

• Recognize that evil is more than outward acts; it begins in the heart (Mark 7:20-23).

• Reject cultural excuses—God’s standard does not shift with society (Malachi 3:6).

Repentance: The First Step

• Confess specific sins to God, naming them without justification (1 John 1:9).

• Turn decisively the opposite direction—true repentance produces changed behavior (Acts 26:20).

• Welcome God’s correction; He disciplines those He loves (Hebrews 12:6-11).

Guard the Mind

• Filter input: limit media that normalizes immorality (Philippians 4:8).

• Renew thinking daily with Scripture (Romans 12:2).

• Memorize verses that confront recurring temptations (Psalm 119:9).

Choose Companions Wisely

• “Bad company corrupts good character” (1 Corinthians 15:33).

• Seek friendships that stir you to love and good deeds (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Distance lovingly but firmly from influences that entice you back to sin (Proverbs 13:20).

Walk in the Spirit, Not the Flesh

• Ask the Holy Spirit for moment-by-moment guidance (Galatians 5:16-17).

• Cultivate His fruit—love, joy, peace, etc.—which crowds out evil desires (Galatians 5:22-23).

• Pray immediately when temptation strikes (Matthew 26:41).

Practice Accountability

• Share struggles with a mature believer who will speak truth in love (James 5:16).

• Set clear, measurable goals for change; review them together regularly.

• Celebrate victories to reinforce obedience and encourage perseverance.

Engage in Active Good

• Replace sinful habits with righteous actions (Ephesians 4:28-32).

• Serve in practical ministries; active obedience leaves less room for sin (Titus 2:14).

• Show mercy and justice, reflecting God’s character in society (Micah 6:8; Isaiah 1:17).

Rely on God’s Promises

• Trust that no temptation is unique or unbeatable (1 Corinthians 10:13).

• Stand firm in the full armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18).

• Remember that Christ’s victory guarantees ours (Romans 8:37-39).

Stopping evil today is not passive avoidance but deliberate, Spirit-empowered action rooted in God’s unchanging Word.
