How can we escape spiritual bondage?
In what ways can we avoid spiritual bondage today?

A Captive People: Lessons from Judges 3:14

“The Israelites were subject to Eglon king of Moab for eighteen years.” (Judges 3:14)

Israel’s physical oppression pictures the spiritual bondage that can overtake any believer who drifts from God’s rule.

Recognize the True Cause of Bondage

• Sin and compromise always open the door (Judges 3:12; Romans 6:16).

• Idolatry today can be anything we value above Christ—career, pleasure, relationships (1 John 5:21).

• Bondage begins when we ignore God’s clear commands (James 1:14-15).

Repent Quickly and Completely

• God’s people cried out, and He raised a deliverer (Judges 3:15).

• Genuine repentance involves:

– Admitting the sin without excuse (Psalm 32:5).

– Turning from it decisively (Proverbs 28:13).

– Accepting Christ’s cleansing (1 John 1:9).

• Delay lengthens captivity; swift repentance restores fellowship.

Submit to the Lordship of Christ

• “If the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed.” (John 8:36)

• Freedom is not self-help; it is surrender—letting Christ reign in every area (Colossians 2:6-7).

• Obedience keeps the enemy from regaining a foothold (Ephesians 4:27).

Guard Your Heart Daily

• “Above all else, guard your heart, for everything you do flows from it.” (Proverbs 4:23)

• Monitor influences—media, friendships, habits—asking, Does this draw me closer to Christ or toward bondage?

• Cultivate gratitude and worship to crowd out temptation (Psalm 95:1-2).

Stay in the Word and Prayer

• Truth uproots lies that enslave (John 8:31-32).

• Regular Scripture intake renews the mind (Romans 12:2).

• Persistent prayer keeps us alert and dependent (Ephesians 6:18).

• Consider a daily rhythm: read, reflect, respond in prayer, record insights.

Stand Firm in Spiritual Warfare

• “Put on the full armor of God.” (Ephesians 6:11)

• Key pieces:

– Belt of truth—reject deception.

– Breastplate of righteousness—walk in integrity.

– Shield of faith—extinguish darts of doubt.

– Sword of the Spirit—the spoken Word against temptation (Matthew 4:1-11).

• Resist the devil, and he will flee (James 4:7).

Walk in the Spirit, Not the Flesh

• “Where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom.” (2 Corinthians 3:17)

• Yield moment-by-moment leadership to the Holy Spirit (Galatians 5:16).

• Replace old patterns with Spirit-empowered virtues—love, joy, peace, self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Live as People Set Free

• Freedom is maintained through community—confession, accountability, mutual encouragement (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Remember God’s past deliverances; testimony strengthens resolve (Psalm 107:2).

• Keep looking to the ultimate Deliverer who will soon crush Satan under our feet (Romans 16:20).
