How can we honor God today?
In what ways can we ensure we honor God in our lives today?

Scene Setting: The Ark on Foreign Soil

“After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.” (1 Samuel 5:1)

The ark symbolized God’s very presence. When it fell into enemy hands, everyone—Israelite and Philistine alike—had to face the question: Will we treat the living God with honor or with contempt?

Lesson 1: Recognize God’s Holiness, Not a Lucky Charm

• Israel had marched the ark into battle as a good-luck token (1 Samuel 4:3–4).

• God refused to be manipulated; His holiness outweighs our strategies.

• Application today:

– Approach worship with reverence (Hebrews 12:28-29).

– Let obedience—not superstition—shape decisions (John 14:15).

– Guard against casual talk about the Lord’s name or ways (Exodus 20:7).

Lesson 2: Remove Idols and Competing Loyalties

• The Philistines parked the ark beside their god Dagon; by morning Dagon lay facedown (1 Samuel 5:2-4).

• Where God reigns, rivals fall.

• Application today:

– Identify modern idols—career, comfort, relationships, screens (1 John 5:21).

– Choose a single Master; you can’t serve God and mammon (Matthew 6:24).

– Regularly “topple” idols through confession and fresh surrender.

Lesson 3: Respect His Presence in Every Sphere

• Tumors and panic spread through Philistine cities (1 Samuel 5:6-12); God showed He rules beyond Israel’s borders.

• Application today:

– Treat every setting—home, work, school—as a place where God is already present (Psalm 139:7-10).

– Remember your body is His temple (1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

– Let conversations, clicks, and calendar choices mirror His nearness.

Practice: Tangible Ways to Honor God Today

• Daily surrender: “Present your bodies as a living sacrifice” (Romans 12:1).

• Heart devotion: Love Him with all mind, soul, and strength (Matthew 22:37).

• Word obedience: “Do whatever He tells you” (John 2:5).

• Grateful stewardship: Time, talents, finances—manage them as His property (Proverbs 3:9).

• Truth proclamation: Declare His excellencies to others (1 Peter 2:9).

• Mercy living: “Act justly, love mercy, walk humbly” (Micah 6:8).

• Consistent integrity: “Whatever you do…do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Colossians 3:17).

A Life That Makes Him Known

Honor flows from hearts that grasp God’s holiness, topple their idols, and welcome His presence into every corner of life. When we live this way, the world sees that the God of the ark—holy, jealous, and yet gracious—is still unmistakably alive today.
