How can we support truth-tellers like Jeremiah?
In what ways can we support those who speak God's truth like Jeremiah?

Setting the Scene

“Now Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malchiah heard Jeremiah telling all the people…” (Jeremiah 38:1).

Jeremiah has just delivered a hard word from the Lord. Four powerful officials hear it and immediately move to silence him (see 38:4–6). Their reaction shows how costly it can be to speak divine truth—yet also how crucial it is for others to stand with God’s messenger.

Why Support Is Needed

• Truth-tellers often face isolation (Jeremiah 15:17).

• Opposition can become physical, financial, or social (Jeremiah 37:15; 38:6).

• The message may challenge national or personal comfort (Jeremiah 38:2-3).

• God frequently works through companions who uphold His servants (e.g., Baruch in Jeremiah 36:4-8).

Practical Ways to Stand With Modern “Jeremiahs”

1. Affirm the message openly

– Speak well of faithful teachers when others malign them (Proverbs 31:8-9).

– Share sound sermons, articles, and resources so truth gains wider hearing (2 Timothy 2:2).

2. Offer tangible care

– Provide hospitality, meals, or financial aid when ministry costs them income or safety (3 John 5-8).

– Help with practical needs: transportation, childcare, study materials.

3. Pray consistently

– Intercede for boldness, clarity, and protection (Ephesians 6:19-20).

– Pray for soft hearts in those who hear, reducing hostility (Acts 16:14).

4. Protect their voice

– Use influence to keep them from being “thrown into the cistern” by modern gatekeepers—write letters, make calls, speak up in meetings (Esther 4:14).

– Provide platforms: small-group studies, podcasts, community events.

5. Encourage emotionally

– Send notes or texts that quote Scripture and remind them of God’s promises (Isaiah 55:11).

– Listen without judgment when they share struggles (Galatians 6:2).

6. Stand beside them publicly

– Attend hearings, services, or events where they must defend truth (Acts 23:11).

– Refuse to laugh at or spread slanderous rumors (Psalm 15:3).

Biblical Snapshots of Support

• Moses & Aaron (Exodus 4:14-16). Aaron’s partnership steadied Moses’ trembling voice.

• Paul & Barnabas (Acts 9:26-27). Barnabas risked reputation to vouch for Paul.

• Ebed-melech & Jeremiah (Jeremiah 38:7-13). One courageous Ethiopian official rescued Jeremiah from the pit—proof that one ally can tilt the balance.

Encouragement to Act

Hebrews 10:24–25 urges believers to “spur one another on toward love and good deeds… all the more as you see the Day approaching”. Supporting God’s truth-speakers is one of those good deeds. When we step in like Ebed-melech, we not only aid a faithful servant; we advance the very Word of the Lord, ensuring it runs freely and is honored (2 Thessalonians 3:1).
