How can we wisely reprove others?
In what ways can we become "a wise reprover" to others?

Setting the context: Proverbs 25:12

“Like an earring of gold and an ornament of fine gold, so is a wise reprover to a listening ear.”

Gold jewelry is precious, attractive, and enduring; Scripture says a loving, discerning rebuke should feel the same to someone ready to hear. Becoming that kind of person takes intentional growth.

Understand the goal of reproof

• Restore, never humiliate (Galatians 6:1)

• Protect the body of Christ from sin’s spread (1 Corinthians 5:6)

• Promote maturity and holiness (Colossians 1:28)

• Guard God’s honor and the credibility of the gospel (Titus 2:10)

Cultivate the character of a wise reprover

• Humility—“first take the beam out of your own eye” (Matthew 7:5)

• Gentleness—“restore him with a spirit of gentleness” (Galatians 6:1)

• Love—“speaking the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15)

• Integrity—live what you urge (1 Timothy 4:12)

• Patience—give space for reflection and change (2 Timothy 4:2)

• Courage—risk awkward moments to rescue a brother or sister (Proverbs 27:6)

Sharpen the skills of wise reproof

• Listen first: “quick to listen, slow to speak” (James 1:19)

• Time it well: “how good is a timely word!” (Proverbs 15:23)

• Speak clearly and briefly; avoid piling on or vague hints

• Ground every point in Scripture’s authority (2 Timothy 3:16)

• Use calm tone and body language that communicates respect

• Offer a path forward—specific steps, accountability, and encouragement

• Affirm what is commendable to keep hope alive (1 Thessalonians 5:11)

Follow the scriptural process

• Start privately (Matthew 18:15)

• If unheard, bring one or two witnesses (Matthew 18:16)

• If still resisted, involve church leadership (Matthew 18:17)

• Maintain confidentiality at every stage; gossip destroys trust

• Aim for repentance and restoration, never personal vindication

Rely on the Spirit

• Pray beforehand for wisdom and the other person’s receptive heart (James 1:5)

• Stay alert to the Spirit’s promptings during the conversation (John 16:13)

• Trust God for results; you plant and water—He gives the growth (1 Corinthians 3:6)

Keep listening and learning

• Welcome reproof yourself: “rebuke a wise man and he will love you” (Proverbs 9:8-9)

• Invite trusted friends to speak into your life (Hebrews 3:13)

• Review each encounter; ask what you could improve

• Remember: a wise reprover is forged over time by consistent obedience to God’s Word
