How do believers find hope in Christ's power?
How can believers find encouragement in Christ's authority over His enemies?

The Royal Scepter Stretched Out

“ ‘The Lord will extend Your mighty scepter from Zion: “Rule in the midst of Your enemies.” ’ ” (Psalm 110:2)

• Scripture presents this scene as an accomplished fact, not a hopeful wish—God Himself stretches the Messiah’s scepter, ensuring His uncontested right to reign.

• Zion highlights a literal geographic center for Christ’s kingdom; His throne is not symbolic but concrete (cf. Jeremiah 3:17; Luke 1:32-33).

• “In the midst of Your enemies” reassures us that Christ does not wait for favorable conditions; He rules right where opposition erupts.

Christ’s Authority Already in Operation

Matthew 28:18—“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.” Nothing falls outside His jurisdiction—politics, pandemics, cultural tides, or personal crises.

Ephesians 1:20-22—The Father “seated Him at His right hand… and placed all things under His feet.” This present placement means believers live under a reigning King today, not a candidate awaiting election.

Colossians 2:15—He “disarmed the powers and authorities, triumphing over them by the cross.” The decisive victory has occurred; enemies now operate on borrowed time.

Encouragement #1: Our Struggles Are Fought from Victory, Not for Victory

• Because Christ’s scepter is active, spiritual warfare (Ephesians 6:10-18) is waged from a position of certainty.

• We resist the devil “firm in the faith” (1 Peter 5:9) knowing the outcome is settled.

• Personal application: when temptation feels overpowering, remember the throne is already occupied by the One who broke sin’s power.

Encouragement #2: His Reign Extends through Us

Psalm 110:3 (immediately following our verse) pictures willing troops rallying to the King—an Old Testament preview of the church.

Acts 1:8 shows how His authority fuels mission: “You will receive power… and you will be My witnesses.”

• Every gospel conversation, act of mercy, or stand for truth is an extension of Christ’s scepter into enemy territory.

Encouragement #3: Final Justice Is Guaranteed

Revelation 19:15-16 depicts the same Messiah wielding “a sharp sword” to strike the nations and wearing the title “King of kings and Lord of lords.”

Psalm 110:5-6 promises He will “execute judgment among the nations.” Oppression, persecution, and evil will meet a sure reckoning.

• Believers can endure injustice without despair, confident that no wrong will slip through His court.

Taking Heart Today

• Recall the image of the outstretched scepter when headlines or hardships suggest evil is winning.

• Speak truth to anxious thoughts: “My King already rules here.”

• Engage culture and conflict boldly, knowing we carry the authority of the risen Lord (2 Corinthians 10:4-5).

• Rest in the certainty that the same hand holding the scepter also upholds His people (Isaiah 41:10).

In what ways can Christians implement the call to 'rule' in their communities?
