How to avoid Zedekiah's spiritual errors?
In what ways can we avoid Zedekiah's mistakes in our spiritual walk?

Setting the Scene

“Zedekiah was twenty-one years old when he became king, and he reigned in Jerusalem eleven years.” (2 Chronicles 36:11)

Those eleven years became a cautionary tale. God carefully recorded Zedekiah’s story so we could walk a wiser road.

Where Zedekiah Went Wrong

• Ignored God’s Word: “He did evil in the sight of the LORD his God and did not humble himself before Jeremiah the prophet, who spoke from the mouth of the LORD.” (v. 12)

• Broke Covenants: “He also rebelled against King Nebuchadnezzar, who had made him swear allegiance by God.” (v. 13)

• Hardened His Heart: “He became stiff-necked and hardened his heart against turning to the LORD, the God of Israel.” (v. 13)

• Influenced Others to Sin: “All the leaders of the priests and the people also were exceedingly unfaithful.” (v. 14)

• Mocked Repeated Warnings: “They mocked God’s messengers, despised His words, and scoffed at His prophets.” (v. 16)

Guardrails for Our Own Walk

1. Stay Tender to God’s Word

• Daily reading coupled with obedience keeps the heart soft (Hebrews 3:15).

• “But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22)

2. Honor Every Commitment

• Zedekiah treated oaths casually. Scripture ties integrity to worship (Psalm 15:4).

• “Let your ‘Yes’ be yes and your ‘No’ be no.” (Matthew 5:37)

3. Cultivate Humility

• Pride stiffens the neck; humility bows it.

• “All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because ‘God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.’” (1 Peter 5:5)

4. Welcome God’s Warnings Early

• God sent “word to them early and often” (2 Chronicles 36:15). Early obedience spares later pain.

• “Whoever is reproved yet stiffens his neck will suddenly be broken without remedy.” (Proverbs 29:1)

5. Lead Others Toward Faithfulness

• Zedekiah’s unfaithfulness spread. Influence can bless or corrode (1 Corinthians 15:33).

• Choose companions who sharpen your devotion and model that same faithfulness to those following you.

Walking the Better Road

• Trust: “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” (Proverbs 3:5)

• Turn: Keep short accounts with God—quick repentance, quick restoration (1 John 1:9).

• Triumph: A yielded life escapes the tragic ending of Zedekiah and tastes the fullness promised to all who “seek first the kingdom of God.” (Matthew 6:33)
