How to avoid a Pharisee-like heart?
In what ways can we guard against hardening our hearts like the Pharisees?

Setting the Scene

Luke 6:11 shows the Pharisees’ reaction to Jesus healing on the Sabbath: “But they were filled with rage and began to discuss with one another what they might do to Jesus.” They had just witnessed a miracle of mercy, yet anger, pride, and self-interest choked any tenderness they might have had toward God’s work. That warning light on the dashboard is still flashing for us today.

What Hardens a Heart?

– Prideful self-righteousness (Luke 18:11-12)

– Loving tradition over truth (Mark 7:8-9)

– Fear of losing position or influence (John 11:48)

– Unconfessed sin that dulls spiritual sensitivity (Hebrews 3:13)

– Hearing God’s Word but refusing to respond (James 1:22; Ezekiel 33:32)

Guardrails for Softness

Stay Amazed at Grace

• Recall daily that salvation is undeserved (Ephesians 2:8-9).

• Celebrate others’ testimonies—don’t compete, rejoice (Luke 15:32).

Keep Short Accounts with God

• “Examine yourselves” (2 Corinthians 13:5).

• Confess quickly—hardness calcifies where sin hides (1 John 1:9).

Practice Obedient Compassion

• Mercy triumphs over ritual when they collide (Micah 6:8; Matthew 12:7).

• Serve someone in need, especially when it inconveniences you—this flexes the heart muscle that resists rigidity.

Seek the Spirit, Not Just the Letter

• Scripture is living; listen for the Author’s voice (Hebrews 4:12).

• Ask, “How can I live this truth today?” rather than merely storing facts (John 5:39-40).

Invite Godly Counsel

• “Encourage one another daily… so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness” (Hebrews 3:13).

• Welcome correction; it softens sharp edges (Proverbs 27:6).

Guard the Sabbath’s Intent

• Use rest days to delight in God, not scrutinize others (Isaiah 58:13-14).

• Let worship refuel affection for Christ, not inflate spiritual scorecards.

Walking It Out Daily

1. Begin mornings by thanking Jesus for specific mercies.

2. Read a short Gospel passage, asking, “What amazes me about Jesus here?”

3. Perform one hidden act of kindness—no credit, no spotlight.

4. End the day with honest confession and gratitude, keeping the soil of the heart freshly tilled.

Encouraging Scriptures to Remember
