How to avoid using harsh words?
What steps can we take to guard against "bitter words" in our speech?

The Root Verse

“Let all bitterness and wrath and anger and outcry and slander be removed from you, along with all malice.” (Ephesians 4:31)

Why Bitter Words Must Go

• They contradict our new nature in Christ (Ephesians 4:22–24).

• They grieve the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 4:30).

• They poison relationships (Hebrews 12:15).

• They invite God’s discipline (Matthew 12:36).

Step 1: Recognize the Source

• Bitter words spring from a bitter heart (Luke 6:45).

• Ask the Spirit to reveal hidden resentments before they leak into speech (Psalm 139:23-24).

Step 2: Practice Immediate Heart-Checking

• When a cutting remark forms, pause and test it:

– Does it build up? (Ephesians 4:29)

– Is it gracious and seasoned with salt? (Colossians 4:6)

– Would I repeat it before Jesus? (Matthew 12:34-37)

Step 3: Replace, Don’t Merely Restrain

• Put off bitterness; put on kindness (Ephesians 4:32).

• Swap harshness for a gentle answer that “turns away wrath” (Proverbs 15:1).

• Memorize verses that supply alternative words (Psalm 19:14).

Step 4: Keep Short Accounts with People

• “Do not let the sun set upon your anger” (Ephesians 4:26).

• Forgive quickly as Christ forgave you (Colossians 3:13).

• Clarify misunderstandings face-to-face before resentment grows (Matthew 18:15).

Step 5: Saturate the Heart with Scripture

• Daily reading renews the mind (Romans 12:2).

• Singing psalms and hymns resets attitudes (Ephesians 5:19).

• Meditating on Christ’s words fills the mouth with life (John 6:63).

Step 6: Guard Influences

• Limit media or friendships that normalize sarcasm and contempt (1 Corinthians 15:33).

• Seek fellowship with believers who model gracious speech (Proverbs 13:20).

Step 7: Invite Accountability

• Ask a trusted believer to flag bitter tones you may overlook (Hebrews 3:13).

• Celebrate progress together, giving thanks to God (Philippians 4:8-9).

Step 8: Depend on the Spirit, Not Willpower

• The flesh can filter words only briefly; the Spirit transforms them permanently (Galatians 5:22-23).

• Pray for a continual filling so that kindness overflows naturally (Ephesians 5:18).

Living It Out

Bitter words lose their grip when hearts stay soft, minds stay renewed, and tongues stay surrendered. Train the inner life, and the outer speech will follow.

How do 'sharp tongues' in Psalm 64:3 relate to modern-day gossip?
