How to eliminate modern idols today?
In what ways can we actively remove modern-day idols from our lives?

Josiah’s Radical Purge

“Then in his presence the altars of the Baals were torn down, and he cut to pieces the incense altars that were above them. He smashed the Asherah poles and the carved and cast images and ground them to powder, and he scattered the dust over the graves of those who had sacrificed to them.” (2 Chronicles 34:4)

Identifying Today’s Subtle Idols

• Anything we trust, love, or obey more than God (Exodus 20:3)

• Possessions and wealth (Matthew 6:24)

• Success, career, reputation (John 12:43)

• Pleasures and entertainment (2 Timothy 3:4)

• Relationships we elevate above Christ (Luke 14:26)

• Self-image, fitness, or appearance (1 Samuel 16:7)

• Ideologies or political loyalties that outrank obedience to Scripture (Colossians 2:8)

Warning Lights That Reveal an Idol

• Where your mind drifts when nothing else demands attention

• What you fear losing the most

• What you sacrifice time, money, and energy to obtain or protect

• What you feel must succeed for life to feel worthwhile

• What provokes anger or despair when threatened

Steps to Tear Down Modern Idols

1. Expose Them with Truth

– Hold every affection under the light of God’s Word (Hebrews 4:12).

– Ask, “Does this compete with my love for Christ?” (Mark 12:30).

2. Renounce and Remove

– Delete, sell, or give away objects that feed the idol (Acts 19:19).

– Set firm boundaries on time-consuming pursuits (Ephesians 5:15-16).

– Unfollow media sources that inflame envy, lust, or greed (Psalm 101:3).

3. Replace, Don’t Just Remove

– Fill freed-up hours with Scripture meditation and prayer (Psalm 1:2).

– Invest resources into kingdom purposes: giving, serving, discipling (Matthew 6:20-21).

– Cultivate habits of thanksgiving to shift desire away from stuff toward the Savior (Colossians 3:15-17).

4. Guard the Heart Daily

– “Keep yourselves from idols.” (1 John 5:21)

– Memorize passages that confront the specific idol you battle (Psalm 119:11).

– Practice weekly Sabbath rhythms that re-center affection on the Lord (Exodus 20:8-10).

5. Walk in Community

– Confess struggles to trusted believers (James 5:16).

– Invite accountability: regular check-ins, honest questions, shared prayer.

– Celebrate victories together, giving glory to God (Romans 12:15).

Motivation for Persistent Vigilance

• Christ “gave Himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age.” (Galatians 1:4)

• We are “bought at a price” and called to glorify God with body and spirit (1 Corinthians 6:20).

• Future reward: “Whoever overcomes will inherit all things, and I will be his God and he will be My son.” (Revelation 21:7)

Living as Singularly Devoted Disciples

Tearing down idols is not a one-time demolition but a continuing lifestyle of surrendered love. Like Josiah, keep smashing anything that rivals God’s throne, grinding it to powder, and scattering it so it cannot be rebuilt. In its place, enthrone Christ daily, letting every decision, desire, and delight echo the anthem, “You alone are Lord.”
