How to ensure fair worker treatment?
In what ways can we ensure fair treatment of workers in our community?

A Clear Call to Protect Workers

“Do not oppress a hired hand who is poor and needy, whether he is a brother or a foreigner residing in one of your towns.” (Deuteronomy 24:14)

Why God Cares About Fair Wages

• God is just: He defends the poor and needy (Psalm 68:5).

• Every worker bears His image (Genesis 1:27).

• Wronging laborers invites judgment (James 5:4).

Guiding Principles from the Whole Counsel of Scripture

• Prompt payment – Leviticus 19:13: “You must not withhold until morning the wages due a hired hand.”

• No exploitation, ever – Proverbs 22:22-23.

• Value the worker’s effort – 1 Timothy 5:18: “The worker is worthy of his wages.”

• Lead with integrity – Colossians 4:1; Ephesians 6:9.

• Same standard for locals and foreigners – Exodus 23:9; Deuteronomy 24:14.

Practical Ways to Ensure Fair Treatment Today

1. Pay on time and in full.

2. Offer wages that meet real living costs, not merely minimum requirements.

3. Provide safe, healthy working conditions; fix hazards immediately.

4. Honor contracts; avoid last-minute changes that disadvantage workers.

5. Give clear schedules so families can plan and rest (cf. Sabbath principle, Exodus 20:8-10).

6. Respect lawful breaks and days off.

7. Offer honest feedback and training instead of threats or intimidation.

8. Speak up when others are exploited: write letters, attend meetings, support ethical businesses.

9. Treat migrants and seasonal laborers with the same fairness shown to citizens.

10. Model generosity: share profits through bonuses or benefits when God prospers the enterprise.

Blessings of Obedience

• Builds trust and loyalty in the workplace.

• Demonstrates the gospel’s transforming power (Matthew 5:16).

• Invites God’s favor on business and community (Deuteronomy 28:1-8).

• Protects against the judgment reserved for oppressors (Malachi 3:5).
