How to ensure genuine faith, not nominal?
How can we ensure our faith is genuine, not just "in name only"?

Key Verse: 2 Corinthians 13:5

“Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Can’t you see for yourselves that Jesus Christ is in you—unless you actually fail the test?”

Why Paul Urges Self-Examination

• A church can look vibrant yet harbor unrepentant hearts (Revelation 3:1).

• Self-deception is possible; “the heart is deceitful above all things” (Jeremiah 17:9).

• Genuine faith brings Christ’s indwelling presence—anything less is mere profession.

Marks of Genuine Faith

• Repentance that turns from sin toward God (Acts 3:19).

• Obedience that flows from love: “We know that we have come to know Him if we keep His commandments” (1 John 2:3).

• Ongoing trust in Christ’s finished work, not personal merit (Ephesians 2:8-9).

• Evident fruit of the Spirit—love, joy, peace, etc. (Galatians 5:22-23).

• Perseverance through trials: “The one who perseveres to the end will be saved” (Matthew 24:13).

• Love for fellow believers (1 John 3:14).

• A growing desire for Scripture and prayer (1 Peter 2:2).

Practical Ways to “Test Yourself”

1. Compare your life with Scripture, not with other people (James 1:22-25).

2. Invite the Holy Spirit to search your heart daily (Psalm 139:23-24).

3. Confess known sin immediately (1 John 1:9).

4. Seek accountability with mature believers (Hebrews 10:24-25).

5. Evaluate your motivations—are they God-centered or self-centered? (Colossians 3:17).

6. Observe your response to correction; genuine faith humbly receives it (Proverbs 9:8-9).

Living Out an Authentic Faith

• Abide in Christ: “Apart from Me you can do nothing” (John 15:5).

• Cultivate spiritual disciplines—Word, prayer, fellowship, service.

• Replace empty ritual with heartfelt worship (John 4:24).

• Serve others sacrificially; faith works through love (James 2:15-17; Galatians 5:6).

• Keep eternity in view, longing for the Master’s “Well done” (Matthew 25:21).

Encouragement from Additional Passages

1 Peter 1:6-7—trials refine faith like gold.

2 Peter 1:5-10—adding virtue confirms one’s calling.

Philippians 2:12-13—“work out” salvation, knowing God “works in” you.

• Jude 20-21—build yourselves up in the most holy faith, keeping yourselves in God’s love.
