How can we avoid the fate described in Psalm 69:27 through Christ? The Sobering Warning of Psalm 69:27 “Add iniquity to their iniquity; let them not share in Your righteousness.” • The psalmist pictures a dreadful destiny: ever-increasing guilt and absolute exclusion from God’s righteousness. • Left to ourselves, we all head toward that same outcome—“for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23). Christ—Our Only Refuge from Accumulating Guilt • God’s answer is not self-reform but a Substitute: “God made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.” (2 Corinthians 5:21) • At the cross, every charge that could be “added” to us was transferred to Jesus. Because He bore it all, nothing remains to be tallied against those who trust Him. Responding in Repentance and Faith • Turn back to God: “Repent therefore, and turn back, so that your sins may be wiped away.” (Acts 3:19) • Believe the good news: “For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that everyone who believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” (John 3:16) • Confess and receive cleansing: “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9) What Christ Gives in Place of Condemnation • Justification—declared righteous: “Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1) • Freedom from judgment: “Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” (Romans 8:1) • A new standing of grace: “Blessed is the man whose iniquity the LORD does not count against him.” (Psalm 32:2) Living Daily in His Righteousness • Continual repentance: “He who conceals his sins will not prosper, but whoever confesses and renounces them will find mercy.” (Proverbs 28:13) • Active faith expressing itself in love (Galatians 5:6). • Good works prepared for us: “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance as our way of life.” (Ephesians 2:10) • Ongoing assurance: “Because by a single offering He has perfected for all time those who are sanctified.” (Hebrews 10:14) In Christ, the Fate Is Reversed Instead of guilt being “added” to us, grace is poured out on us. Instead of being barred from God’s righteousness, we are clothed in it forever. Hold fast to Him, and the warning of Psalm 69:27 becomes a backdrop highlighting the glory of the salvation that is yours in Jesus. |
