How to find God's guidance in trials?
What strategies can we use to discern God's guidance in difficult situations?

Grounding Our Discussion in the Text

“Even now he is hiding in one of the caves or in some other place. And if he should attack your troops first, whoever hears of it will say, ‘There has been a slaughter among the troops who follow Absalom.’ ” (2 Samuel 17:9)

Hushai’s words to Absalom reveal two big realities: David’s resourcefulness and God’s unseen hand shaping events. When choices grow complicated, we face the same twin issues—recognizing human factors and trusting God’s guidance. From this verse and its setting, several practical strategies emerge.

Strategy 1 – Weigh Every Voice by the Word

• Ahithophel’s plan sounded brilliant (17:1–4), yet God overturned it (17:14).

• Measure counsel against Scripture’s clear teaching: Psalm 1:1; Acts 17:11.

• Ask, “Does this advice align with God’s revealed character and commands?”

Strategy 2 – Notice How God Uses Conflicting Counsel

• Two advisors, two opposite plans: God used the clash to protect David.

Romans 8:28 reminds us that God weaves even mixed motives into His design.

• When opinions diverge, pause and watch for the Lord’s underlying direction.

Strategy 3 – Discern the Enemy’s Patterns

• Hushai assumes David will act from hidden places—accurate insight into David’s tactics.

• Knowing how the enemy (spiritual or circumstantial) tends to move helps us pray and plan: 1 Peter 5:8; 2 Corinthians 2:11.

• Stay alert, but let vigilance feed faith, not fear.

Strategy 4 – Seek Wisdom Directly from God

James 1:5 promises wisdom to all who ask.

• David himself modeled this habit: 1 Samuel 23:2, 4; 30:8.

• Private, honest prayer time tunes the heart to hear God’s “yes,” “no,” or “wait.”

Strategy 5 – Look for Providence in Real-Time Events

• Verse 14 spells it out: “For the LORD had ordained to thwart the good counsel of Ahithophel…”

• Closed doors, delayed timetables, sudden openings—each can signal the Lord’s steering. Proverbs 16:9; Revelation 3:7.

Strategy 6 – Confirm Through God-Fearing Community

• David benefited from loyal friends (Hushai, Zadok, Nathan).

Proverbs 15:22: “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.”

• Seek out mature believers who prize Scripture over opinion.

Strategy 7 – Wait Rather Than Rush

• Hushai’s plan bought David time to regroup (17:15–22).

Isaiah 30:15: “In quietness and trust shall be your strength.”

• When unsure, choose the slower path of patient obedience instead of impulsive action.

Strategy 8 – Anchor Decisions in God’s Unchanging Promises

• David carried the covenant promise of 2 Samuel 7. That larger story steadied him.

Romans 15:4: what was “written in the past” fuels present endurance and hope.

• Identify specific promises and rehearse them aloud while weighing options.

Putting It All Together

1. Open your Bible first, not last.

2. Pray for wisdom, asking God to sift every suggestion.

3. Compare counsel with Scripture’s boundaries.

4. Watch current events for God’s fingerprints.

5. Confirm insights with trusted believers.

6. Wait until His peace rules (Colossians 3:15).

The Lord guided David through caves, advisors, and shifting circumstances; He will guide His people today with equal faithfulness and clarity.
