How can we discern God's will when facing opposition like David? The Setting of 1 Samuel 23:7 “Then it was reported to Saul that David had gone to Keilah. So Saul said, ‘God has delivered him into my hand, for he has trapped himself by entering a town with gates and bars.’” Saul interprets a convenient circumstance as divine approval to destroy David. David, however, refuses to lean on circumstance alone; he seeks the Lord’s explicit guidance. The contrast teaches us how to recognize God’s will amid pressure and hostility. What David Did Right • He inquired of the LORD repeatedly (23:2, 4, 10–12). • He submitted to God’s answer even when it meant hardship—leaving Keilah to become a fugitive again. • He relied on revealed truth, not assumptions, to interpret events. Lessons for Us When Opposed • Circumstances can mislead; they must be tested against God’s Word. Saul thought God was with him because conditions looked favorable, yet he stood in rebellion. • Discernment grows when we keep short accounts with God. David’s ongoing communion gave him clarity that Saul lacked. • Opposition does not cancel God’s plan. “The LORD foils the plans of the nations” (Psalm 33:10). If He delivered David, He can steer us through any resistance. Practical Steps for Discerning God’s Will 1. Seek Scripture first. – “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” (Psalm 119:105) 2. Pray specifically and expectantly. – “Call to Me, and I will answer you.” (Jeremiah 33:3) 3. Listen for the Spirit’s prompting that aligns with the Word. – “My sheep listen to My voice.” (John 10:27) 4. Consult mature, godly counsel. – “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” (Proverbs 15:22) 5. Wait for confirmation; do not rush. – “Be still before the LORD and wait patiently for Him.” (Psalm 37:7) 6. Evaluate motives: Am I pursuing God’s glory or personal ease? 7. Watch for God’s providential ordering of events—but test these doors against Steps 1–6. Promises to Hold Onto • Proverbs 3:5–6—He will make your paths straight. • Psalm 32:8—“I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go.” • James 1:5—He gives wisdom generously to all who ask. • Isaiah 30:21—“Your ears will hear a word behind you, saying, ‘This is the way, walk in it.’” Opposition may be fierce, but God’s guidance is firmer. Walk in the steady light of His unerring Word, and you will discern His will just as clearly as David did. |
