How to foster understanding, not react?
How can we cultivate understanding to prevent acting "like irrational animals"?

The Warning in Jude 1:10

“But these men blaspheme in matters they do not understand, and like irrational animals, they will be destroyed by the things they do instinctively.”

• Lack of understanding leads to reckless speech.

• Living by unchecked instinct ends in destruction.

• The contrast implied: people of faith choose truth-guided understanding over impulse-driven living.

Why Understanding Matters

Proverbs 2:6 — “For the LORD gives wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding.”

1 Corinthians 2:14 — “The natural man does not accept the things of the Spirit of God… he cannot understand them.”

Romans 12:2 — Renewed minds discern God’s will; conformed minds follow instinct.

Understanding guards the tongue, shapes decisions, and distinguishes a Spirit-led life from mere animal impulse.

God’s Pathways to Understanding

1. The Written Word — Psalm 119:130: “The unfolding of Your words gives light; it imparts understanding to the simple.”

2. The Holy Spirit — John 16:13: “When the Spirit of truth comes, He will guide you into all truth.”

3. God-given Teachers — Ephesians 4:11-12: pastors and teachers equip the saints “to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God.”

4. Obedient Practice — Psalm 111:10: “All who follow His precepts have good understanding.”

Practical Steps to Grow in Understanding

• Prioritize Daily Scripture Intake

– Set a consistent time; read with expectation (Psalm 119:18).

– Use a notebook: write questions, key truths, applications.

• Pray for Illumination

James 1:5: “If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God.”

– Ask the Spirit to bridge the gap between head knowledge and heart conviction.

• Study, Don’t Skim

2 Timothy 2:15: “Present yourself approved… accurately handling the word of truth.”

– Employ word studies, cross-references, and reliable commentaries.

• Cultivate Discernment in Community

Hebrews 10:24-25: meet together; sound believers sharpen one another.

– Invite correction; test every teaching (1 Thessalonians 5:21).

• Obey Promptly

John 7:17: willingness to do God’s will precedes deeper understanding.

– Practice small obediences; insight grows with faithfulness.

• Guard the Tongue

Proverbs 18:13: “He who answers before listening—folly and shame.”

– Slow speech, quick listening reduces instinct-driven outbursts.

• Walk by the Spirit

Galatians 5:16: live by the Spirit and you “will not gratify the desires of the flesh.”

– Continual dependence keeps instinct in check.

Signs We’re Moving From Instinct to Insight

• Speech becomes gracious and truthful (Ephesians 4:29).

• Choices reflect Scripture over emotion.

• Temptations are met with remembered promises (Matthew 4:4).

• Discernment grows: error is spotted quickly (Hebrews 5:14).

• Peace replaces reactionary anxiety (Isaiah 26:3).

Staying the Course

• Keep the end in view—Matthew 7:24: the wise build on the rock and withstand storms.

• Persevere—Galatians 6:9: “Let us not grow weary in doing good.”

• Encourage one another daily—Hebrews 3:13.

Understanding is cultivated, not assumed. As the Word fills the mind, the Spirit directs the heart, and obedience shapes habits, believers rise above instinct and reflect Christ’s wisdom in a confused world.
