How to help others resist temptation?
How can we support others in overcoming temptations and avoiding sin?

Setting the Scene

We all know people—friends, family, church members—who wrestle with temptation. Scripture calls us not to stand by passively but to step in with grace and truth, helping them stay on the narrow path.

Understanding Matthew 18:7

“Woe to the world for causes of sin… woe to the one by whom the stumbling block comes!” (Matthew 18:7)

• Jesus warns that stumbling blocks are inevitable, but He places solemn responsibility on those who cause them.

• Because temptation is real, He expects His followers to fight against anything that might trip others up.

Why Our Role Matters

• Temptation thrives in isolation; godly community breaks its power (cf. Hebrews 10:24–25).

• Scripture portrays believers as a body (1 Corinthians 12). When one part suffers, all suffer; when one is tempted, all feel the pull.

• Love for Christ is shown by love for His people (John 13:34–35); supporting a brother or sister proves that love.

Practical Ways to Support Others

• Be available and approachable

– A listening ear often disarms shame.

• Speak truth gently

– Combine honesty with compassion (Galatians 6:1).

• Share Scripture that offers hope and a way out

– God always provides an escape (1 Corinthians 10:13).

• Encourage accountability

– Regular check-ins, shared Bible reading, and prayer partnerships keep hearts soft.

• Celebrate victories—big or small

– Joy reinforces right choices and reminds everyone that obedience is worth it.

• Provide practical help

– Remove access to stumbling blocks (filters on devices, schedule changes, wise boundaries).

• Model holiness yourself

– Personal integrity gives weight to counsel (Philippians 3:17).

Guarding Our Own Hearts While Helping

• Stay humble—any of us can fall (1 Corinthians 10:12).

• Keep motives pure: restoration, not superiority (James 5:19–20).

• Pray privately for discernment and protection; spiritual battles are won in the secret place (Ephesians 6:10–18).

• Maintain your own rhythms of Word intake and fellowship so you don’t run on empty.

Encouragement from Other Scriptures

James 5:16—mutual confession and intercession bring healing.

Hebrews 10:24—consider creative ways to spur one another on to love and good deeds.

Proverbs 27:17—“Iron sharpens iron”; faithful friends refine each other.

2 Timothy 2:22—pursue righteousness with those who call on the Lord from a pure heart.

Closing Thoughts

Supporting others in temptation is not optional; it’s obedience to Christ’s warning in Matthew 18:7. As we draw near, speak truth, and walk beside one another, we become living proof that God’s grace is stronger than any snare the world sets.

In what ways can we actively combat temptations in our daily lives?
