How to resist daily temptations?
In what ways can we actively combat temptations in our daily lives?

The Seriousness of Temptation (Matthew 18:7)

“Woe to the world for the causes of sin. These stumbling blocks must come, but woe to the man through whom they come!”

• “Woe” signals grave danger—temptation is never trivial.

• “Must come” reminds us that temptations are inevitable in a fallen world.

• “Woe to the man through whom they come” warns that we can either spread temptation or stand against it. Our calling is the latter.

Seeing the Battlefield

• Temptation targets our minds (2 Corinthians 10:5), our desires (James 1:14-15), and our surroundings (1 John 2:16).

• The enemy is Satan (1 Peter 5:8), the world system (1 John 2:15), and the flesh (Galatians 5:17).

• We fight on three fronts: guard the eye gate, renew the mind, and order the affections.

God’s Promised Help

1 Corinthians 10:13—“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man… He will also provide an escape.”

Hebrews 4:15-16—Jesus sympathizes and supplies mercy and grace “in time of need.”

2 Peter 2:9—“The Lord knows how to rescue the godly from trials.”

Practical Steps to Combat Temptation

Daily disciplines:

• Scripture saturation—“I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You” (Psalm 119:11).

• Consistent prayer—“Lead us not into temptation” (Matthew 6:13).

• Spirit-dependence—“Walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh” (Galatians 5:16).

Mental strategies:

• Redirect—Immediately shift thoughts (Philippians 4:8).

• Replace—Substitute the lie with truth (Ephesians 4:22-24).

• Refuse—Say a decisive no (Titus 2:11-12).

Physical safeguards:

• Remove triggers—Flee situations that feed the flesh (2 Timothy 2:22).

• Install accountability—“Two are better than one” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10); confess to trusted believers (James 5:16).

• Establish rhythms—Proper rest, exercise, and healthy routines reduce vulnerability.

Relational commitments:

• Cultivate godly friendships—“Bad company corrupts good character” (1 Corinthians 15:33).

• Serve actively—Engagement in ministry leaves less room for idle temptation (Romans 12:11).

• Encourage others—Helping them resist strengthens your own resolve (Hebrews 3:13).

Deploying the Armor of God (Ephesians 6:10-18)

• Belt of truth—counter deception.

• Breastplate of righteousness—guard the heart.

• Shoes of readiness—stay mission-minded.

• Shield of faith—extinguish flaming arrows.

• Helmet of salvation—protect thought life.

• Sword of the Spirit—the spoken Word cuts temptation down.

• Constant prayer—keeps armor fitted and functional.

Living Alert, Not Fearful

• Watchful eyes (Matthew 26:41) united with joyful confidence (Romans 8:37).

• Even when we stumble, immediate confession restores fellowship (1 John 1:9).

• Each victory strengthens faith and magnifies Christ (James 1:2-4).

Choose daily to be a conduit of holiness, not a carrier of stumbling blocks, and the “woe” of Matthew 18:7 turns into a witness of grace and triumph.

How does Matthew 18:7 connect with Romans 14:13 on avoiding causing others to sin?
