How to identify God's role in life?
In what ways can we discern what belongs to God in our lives?

Reading Mark 12:17 in Context

“Then Jesus told them, ‘Give to Caesar what is Caesar’s, and to God what is God’s.’ And they marveled at Him.”

• The coin carried Caesar’s image, signaling Caesar’s rightful claim.

• By contrast, whatever carries God’s image rightfully belongs to Him.

The Principle: Image Determines Ownership

Genesis 1:27—“So God created man in His own image…”

Psalm 24:1—“The earth is the LORD’s, and the fullness thereof.”

• Conclusion: wherever God’s imprint is found, His ownership is absolute.

What Bears God’s Image in Us

• Our very lives—breath, body, mind (Acts 17:25; 1 Corinthians 6:19-20).

• Our time—“Teach us to number our days” (Psalm 90:12).

• Our abilities—spiritual gifts and talents (1 Peter 4:10).

• Our resources—finances, possessions (Malachi 3:10; Proverbs 3:9).

• Our relationships—marriage, family, friendships (Ephesians 5:22-6:4).

• Our decisions—conscience shaped by Scripture (Romans 14:23).

Practical Ways to Discern What Belongs to God

1. The Origin Test

– Ask, “Did this originate from God’s creative hand or providence?” If yes, it is His.

2. The Purpose Test

– Compare use to Scripture’s stated purposes (Ephesians 2:10). Mis-alignment signals mis-ownership.

3. The Stewardship Test

1 Corinthians 4:2: “It is required of stewards that they be found faithful.” If I am steward, He is owner.

4. The Affection Test

Matthew 6:21: “Where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” Heart-attachment reveals lordship.

5. The Obedience Test

John 14:15: “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” Willing obedience shows we’ve returned what is His.

Common Areas We Tend to Withhold

• Finances—tithes, offerings, generosity.

• Time—Sabbath rest, corporate worship, service.

• Body—purity, health, work habits.

• Plans—career moves, retirement dreams, future security.

• Affections—entertainment choices, secret sin, misplaced priorities.

Responding with Whole-Hearted Surrender

Romans 12:1—Offer your bodies as living sacrifices.

Colossians 3:17—Whatever you do, do it in the name of the Lord Jesus.

1 Corinthians 10:31—Whether you eat or drink, do all to God’s glory.

Giving God what is God’s is not a single transaction; it is a continual recognition that every facet of life stamped with His image is rightfully His, joyfully returned in worshipful obedience.
