How to identify and manage personal pride?
What steps can we take to recognize and address pride in our own lives?

Setting the Scene

Exodus 9 records the devastating hail that struck Egypt. Moses confronts Pharaoh and declares, “But as for you and your officials, I know that you still do not fear the LORD God.” (Exodus 9:30) Scripture presents this event as literal history, revealing a proud heart that refuses to bow before God’s clear power. From Pharaoh’s example we learn how pride hides, how it hardens, and how the Lord calls us to repentance.

Exposing the Roots of Pride

• Pride resists godly fear. Pharaoh witnessed repeated plagues yet still would not “fear the LORD God.”

• Pride masks itself with temporary words. Earlier Pharaoh said, “I have sinned” (Exodus 9:27), but his heart remained unchanged.

• Pride always opposes the knowledge of God (2 Chronicles 26:16; Romans 1:21).

Inviting the Searchlight of God

Step 1: Ask God to reveal hidden pride.

Psalm 139:23-24: “Search me, O God… See if there is any offensive way in me.”

• Regular, prayerful self-examination under the authority of Scripture uncovers attitudes we overlook.

Testing Words and Deeds

Step 2: Compare what we say with what we do.

• Pharaoh’s confession sounded right, but his actions contradicted it.

James 1:22 calls believers to be “doers of the word, and not hearers only.”

Practical checkpoints:

– Do I follow through on my promises?

– Do I repent when confronted, or simply apologize to quiet the moment?

Growing in the Fear of the LORD

Step 3: Cultivate a reverent awareness of God’s greatness.

Proverbs 9:10 teaches that “the fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom.”

• Meditate on His attributes—holiness (Isaiah 6:1-5), sovereignty (Psalm 103:19), mercy displayed at the cross (Romans 5:8).

As awe of God rises, self-exaltation shrinks.

Walking in Prompt Obedience

Step 4: Respond immediately when conviction comes.

• Pharaoh delayed and disaster intensified.

Hebrews 3:15 warns against hardening the heart “Today, if you hear His voice.”

Quick obedience trains the heart toward humility.

Choosing Humble Service

Step 5: Replace self-focus with servant living.

• Jesus washed the disciples’ feet (John 13:1-17) and said, “I have set you an example.”

Practical avenues:

– Seek tasks that receive little applause.

– Celebrate others’ successes without inserting personal achievements.

– Give without expecting recognition (Matthew 6:1-4).

Keeping the Cross in View

Step 6: Remember that grace, not accomplishment, secures acceptance.

• “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” (James 4:6)

• Gazing at Christ crucified reminds us that every merit comes from Him, turning our boast into gratitude (Galatians 6:14).

Summary Path

1. Invite God’s searching.

2. Measure deeds against words.

3. Deepen fear of the LORD.

4. Obey swiftly.

5. Serve quietly.

6. Fix eyes on the cross.

God’s Word, accurate and unfailing, exposes pride and directs us toward the humility that welcomes His favor and glory.

How can we ensure our hearts are not hardened like Pharaoh's in Exodus 9:30?
