How to keep worship pure and God-focused?
How can we ensure our worship remains pure and God-centered?

The warning sounded in Ezekiel 16:24

“You built yourself a mound and made yourself a lofty shrine in every public square.”

Why this verse matters today

- The “mound” and “lofty shrine” were literal structures erected by Judah.

- God saw them as spiritual adultery because they drew hearts from Him.

- Modern worship faces the same danger whenever anything—stage, style, personality, technology, or tradition—becomes the focal point.

Guarding worship from contamination

- Renounce every form of idolatry. “Little children, keep yourselves from idols.” (1 John 5:21)

- Resist cultural pressures that demand entertainment over reverence. “Do not be conformed to this world.” (Romans 12:2)

- Identify subtle substitutes—success, comfort, applause—that creep onto the throne God alone occupies.

Anchor every gathering in Scripture

- Jesus said, “Sanctify them by the truth; Your word is truth.” (John 17:17)

- Read it publicly (1 Timothy 4:13), sing it (Colossians 3:16), and preach it faithfully (2 Timothy 4:2).

- Let the text set the agenda; songs, prayers, and sermons flow from what God has already spoken.

Keep motives pure and God-centered

- Worship aims at God’s pleasure, not ours. “Whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all to the glory of God.” (1 Corinthians 10:31)

- Offer bodies “as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your spiritual service of worship.” (Romans 12:1)

- Evaluate decisions by one standard: does this magnify the Lord or distract from Him?

Maintain wholehearted obedience

- Jesus links love and obedience: “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)

- Active obedience protects against empty ritual. Amos 5:23-24 shows God rejecting songs divorced from justice and righteousness.

- Align lifestyle with confession; integrity outside the sanctuary safeguards authenticity inside it.

Celebrate the exclusivity of covenant love

- God’s first commandment still stands: “You shall have no other gods before Me.” (Exodus 20:3)

- The church is Christ’s bride (Ephesians 5:25-27). Fidelity means undivided devotion.

- Refuse spiritual compromise, just as a faithful spouse rejects adulterous advances.

Cultivate Christ-focused affections

- Fix eyes on Jesus, “the author and perfecter of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:2)

- Center songs on His person and work—incarnation, cross, resurrection, reign, and return.

- Remember He is present when believers gather (Matthew 18:20), making every meeting holy ground.

Practice continual vigilance

- Regularly examine ministry methods, budgets, and schedules for misplaced priorities.

- Invite accountable voices—elders, mature believers—to speak into planning.

- Stay prayerful and sensitive to the Spirit, who “will guide you into all truth.” (John 16:13)

Living response

Worship remains pure and God-centered when Scripture governs, Christ captivates, obedience follows, and every rival idol is torn down—as surely as the mounds and shrines of Ezekiel’s day needed demolition.
