How to meet law's righteous demands?
How can we fulfill "the righteous requirement of the law" in our daily lives?

Opening the Text: Romans 8:4

“so that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us, who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.”

What Does “the Righteous Requirement” Mean?

• God’s law demands perfect moral conformity—absolute love for Him and neighbor (Matthew 22:37-40).

• No human, on their own, measures up (Romans 3:23).

• Christ fulfilled the law’s demands on our behalf (Matthew 5:17). Now His Spirit enables that fulfillment to show up in our daily conduct.

Living by the Spirit vs. Living by the Flesh

• Flesh: self-reliant nature ruled by sin (Romans 8:7-8).

• Spirit: the indwelling Holy Spirit directing thoughts, motives, and actions (Romans 8:9-11).

• The verse’s key: “walk according to the Spirit.” Fulfillment flows from relationship, not mere rule-keeping.

Practical Marks of a Spirit-Led Life

1. Dependence on Christ

John 15:5 “apart from Me you can do nothing.”

– Daily confession of need, continual drawing of strength from Him.

2. Mindset Transformation

Romans 8:5 “those who live according to the Spirit set their minds on the things of the Spirit.”

– Regular Scripture intake shapes desires and priorities.

3. Active Mortification of Sin

Romans 8:13 “if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.”

– Identify fleshly patterns; rely on Spirit-given power to refuse them.

4. Displaying the Fruit of the Spirit

Galatians 5:22-23 lists love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control.

– These qualities satisfy every relational command of the law.

5. Walking in Love

Romans 13:8-10 “he who loves his neighbor has fulfilled the law.”

– Ask, “What does love look like here?” and act on the answer.

Daily Habits That Foster Fulfillment

• Start each morning acknowledging the Spirit’s presence and leadership.

• Meditate on a short passage; let it set the day’s agenda (Psalm 1:2).

• Engage in continual, conversational prayer—quick invitations for guidance before decisions (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

• Practice immediate obedience when Scripture or conscience, illumined by the Spirit, prompts action.

• Cultivate community: Spirit-filled believers encourage and correct one another (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• End the day with gratitude and honest reflection, confessing failure, celebrating grace (1 John 1:9).

Guardrails Against Legalism and License

• Legalism: striving to meet God’s standards by human effort. Remedy—remember justification is entirely Christ’s accomplishment (Ephesians 2:8-9).

• License: ignoring God’s standards because grace abounds. Remedy—remember the Spirit produces holiness, not indifference (Titus 2:11-14).

The Promise of Ongoing Transformation

Philippians 2:13 “for it is God who works in you to will and to act on behalf of His good pleasure.”

Ezekiel 36:27 “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes.”

• Present obedience is the Spirit’s foretaste of the perfect conformity we will enjoy when Christ returns (1 John 3:2).

Summary

We fulfill the righteous requirement of the law by walking moment-by-moment under the Holy Spirit’s direction. Trust Christ’s finished work, tune your mind to the Spirit through Scripture and prayer, put sin to death, and let love guide every interaction. In this way the law’s holy demands become a living reality in daily life.
