How to not emulate Pharisees today?
How can we avoid being like the Pharisees in Mark 7:1 today?

Setting the Scene

“Then the Pharisees and some of the scribes who had come from Jerusalem gathered around Jesus” (Mark 7:1). They soon criticize the disciples for eating with “defiled” hands (vv. 2-5). Jesus answers by exposing how human tradition can mask a heart far from God (vv. 6-13).

What Went Wrong for the Pharisees

• Elevated tradition above God’s Word (vv. 8-9)

• Focused on external appearances, neglecting inner devotion (v. 6; cf. 1 Samuel 16:7)

• Used loopholes (“Corban”) to sidestep clear commands to honor parents (vv. 10-13; cf. Exodus 20:12)

• Sought human approval and status (Matthew 23:5-7)

• Were blind to their own need for grace (Luke 18:11-12)

Practical Steps to Avoid Pharisaic Attitudes Today

1. Prioritize Scripture over tradition

• “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path” (Psalm 119:105).

• Test every practice—church, family, cultural—by the plain teaching of Scripture.

2. Keep the heart central

• “Man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7).

• Daily invite the Spirit to search motives (Psalm 139:23-24).

3. Practice authentic obedience, not performance

• “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves” (James 1:22).

• Serve when no one is watching; give anonymously (Matthew 6:1-4).

4. Embrace mercy and justice over rule-keeping for its own sake

• “He has shown you, O man, what is good… to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God” (Micah 6:8).

• Value people above policies; rules exist to love God and neighbor (Matthew 22:37-40).

5. Cultivate humility

• “All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another” (1 Peter 5:5).

• Remember that any righteousness we have is Christ’s gift (Philippians 3:9).

6. Guard against hypocrisy through regular repentance

• “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us” (1 John 1:9).

• Keep short accounts with God and others; apologize quickly.

7. Live in the freedom of the Spirit, not bondage to rules

• “It is for freedom that Christ has set us free… do not be entangled again in a yoke of slavery” (Galatians 5:1).

• Let the Spirit lead into love, joy, peace (Galatians 5:16, 22-23).

Measuring Our Progress

• More delight in Christ than in rituals (Psalm 37:4)

• Greater compassion for the broken (Matthew 9:36)

• Quickness to listen, slowness to speak or judge (James 1:19)

• Consistency between private life and public testimony (Luke 12:1-3)

Closing Reflection

Pharisaism thrives wherever traditions eclipse truth, externals overshadow the heart, and pride replaces humility. By anchoring ourselves in Scripture, seeking a pure heart, and walking in Spirit-driven love, we sidestep their pitfalls and showcase the reality of Christ to a watching world.
