How to recognize God's warnings today?
How can we discern God's warnings today, as in Jeremiah 1:13?

Jeremiah’s Vision of the Boiling Pot

“Again the word of the LORD came to me, asking, ‘What do you see?’ ‘I see a boiling pot,’ I replied, ‘and it is tilting toward us from the north.’” (Jeremiah 1:13)

This dramatic image announced approaching judgment on Judah. God showed Jeremiah exactly what was coming, why it was coming, and where it was coming from. The vision is a model for how the Lord still warns His people.

Timeless Principles Behind the Warning

• God initiates the warning before judgment falls (Jeremiah 1:14–16).

• He often packages His warning in vivid, memorable pictures (cf. Amos 8:1–2).

• The warning is specific: who, what, where, and why.

• Its purpose is repentance, not mere prediction (Jeremiah 26:3).

Ways God Warns Today

• His written Word

– “All Scripture is God-breathed and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness.” (2 Timothy 3:16)

• The inner conviction of the Holy Spirit

– “When He comes, He will convict the world regarding sin and righteousness and judgment.” (John 16:8)

• Faithful preaching and teaching

– “How can they hear without someone to preach?” (Romans 10:14)

• Providential events that awaken the conscience

– “You will hear of wars and rumors of wars… these are the beginning of birth pains.” (Matthew 24:6–8)

• Loving discipline in our lives

– “For the Lord disciplines the one He loves.” (Hebrews 12:6)

• The testimony of fellow believers

– “In an abundance of counselors there is victory.” (Proverbs 11:14)

Signs a Warning Is Truly from God

• It aligns with the plain teaching of Scripture.

• It magnifies Christ rather than the messenger (John 16:14).

• It exposes sin and calls for repentance, not mere sensationalism (Isaiah 58:1).

• It is confirmed by the Spirit’s inner witness and the godly counsel of mature believers (1 John 4:1).

• It produces the fruit of righteousness when heeded (James 3:17-18).

Sharpening Our Discernment

• Saturate your mind with daily Scripture—“Your word is a lamp to my feet.” (Psalm 119:105)

• Maintain a tender, responsive heart—“Today, if you hear His voice, do not harden your hearts.” (Hebrews 3:15)

• Pray for clarity—“Call to Me and I will answer you and show you great and mighty things you do not know.” (Jeremiah 33:3)

• Test every message—“The Bereans… examined the Scriptures daily to see if these teachings were true.” (Acts 17:11)

• Walk in obedience to what you already know—“Whoever has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me.” (John 14:21)

Responses to Avoid

• Ignoring the warning—“Because I called and you refused… calamity will strike you.” (Proverbs 1:24-27)

• Rationalizing sin—“Woe to those who call evil good and good evil.” (Isaiah 5:20)

• Delaying repentance—“Do not boast about tomorrow, for you do not know what a day may bring.” (Proverbs 27:1)

Healthy Responses to Embrace

• Immediate confession and turning from sin (1 John 1:9).

• Seeking wise, godly counsel for next steps (Proverbs 15:22).

• Practical obedience—adjusting habits, relationships, or priorities as needed (Luke 3:8).

• Sharing the warning lovingly with others (Ezekiel 3:17-18).

The Outcome of Heeding vs. Ignoring

• Heeding brings mercy and restoration—“Now therefore, reform your ways… then the LORD will relent.” (Jeremiah 26:13)

• Ignoring brings certain judgment—“He who is often reproved, yet stiffens his neck, will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy.” (Proverbs 29:1)

Staying Alert in Every Generation

God still speaks clearly and consistently through His Word, His Spirit, and His providential dealings. Like Jeremiah, we are called to watch, listen, and respond promptly. When we treat His warnings with the seriousness they deserve, we experience His safeguarding love and extend that same grace to a world that desperately needs it.
