How to spiritually resist temptations?
How can we prepare spiritually to face temptations like Jesus did in Matthew 4?

Set the Scene: The Tempter’s Challenge

“Then the tempter came to Him and said, ‘If You are the Son of God, tell these stones to become bread.’” (Matthew 4:3)

- Satan strikes when physical need is high and surroundings are barren.

- The aim: make Jesus prove His identity through self-reliance instead of trusting the Father.

Know Your Adversary’s Pattern

- Attacks come when we are tired, hungry, or alone.

- He questions God’s Word and goodness (Genesis 3:1).

- He offers shortcuts that dodge obedience.

“Be sober-minded and alert. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” (1 Peter 5:8)

Saturate Your Heart with Scripture

- Jesus countered every snare with “It is written.”

- Memorized verses turn the mind into a ready armory.

“I have hidden Your word in my heart that I might not sin against You.” (Psalm 119:11)

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any double-edged sword…” (Hebrews 4:12)

Practical helps:

• Follow a daily reading plan.

• Keep verse cards for areas of struggle.

• Speak Scripture aloud when temptation surfaces.

Fast and Pray to Deepen Dependence

- Forty days of fasting (Matthew 4:2) prepared Jesus’ spirit.

- Fasting weakens fleshly self-trust, sharpening spiritual hearing.

“Pray without ceasing.” (1 Thessalonians 5:17)

Start small:

• Fast one meal weekly for focused prayer.

• Insert brief “breath prayers” during routine moments.

Suit Up in God’s Armor

“Therefore take up the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you will be able to stand your ground, and having done everything, to stand.” (Ephesians 6:13)

- Belt of Truth – honest thinking.

- Breastplate of Righteousness – obedient living.

- Shoes of Gospel Peace – readiness to move with good news.

- Shield of Faith – extinguish flaming lies.

- Helmet of Salvation – sure identity.

- Sword of the Spirit – spoken Word.

Anchor Your Identity in the Father’s Voice

“This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.” (Matthew 3:17)

- Satan begins with “If you are…”; victory rests in “You are…”.

- Regularly rehearse adoption truths (Ephesians 1:3-7; Romans 8:15-17).

Live Alert and Accountable

“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” (James 4:7)

- Share struggles with a trusted believer; secrecy breeds defeat.

- Worship and fellowship prime hearts for vigilance.

Expect God’s Faithfulness

“No temptation has seized you except what is common to man. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide an escape, so that you can stand up under it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13)

- Temptations are common, God’s escape routes are certain.

Daily Action Plan

Morning

• Read Scripture; memorize one verse.

• Verbally “put on” the armor.

Midday

• Pause to quote your verse; thank God for identity.

Evening

• Review the day, confess slips, receive cleansing, rest in grace.

Walk into every wilderness moment armed with “It is written,” confident the Father’s Word is enough.
