How to spot life's elements?
How can we identify "the things in the world" in our lives?

Setting the Stage

1 John 2:15: “Do not love the world or anything in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.”

Defining “the World”

Scripture is clear that “the world” here is not creation itself but a system opposed to God.

1 John 2:16 clarifies: “For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh, the desires of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not from the Father but from the world.”

James 4:4; John 15:18-19 show the same contrast between God’s kingdom and the world’s values.

Spotting Worldly Things in Our Hearts

Use 2:16 as a diagnostic tool:

• Desires of the flesh – compulsions that promise physical or emotional gratification but sideline obedience.

‑ Examples: entertainment that normalizes sin, habits that dull spiritual hunger, indulgent pleasures that dominate time and budget.

• Desires of the eyes – cravings awakened by what we see.

‑ Examples: coveting possessions, chasing trends for image’s sake, scrolling with envy.

• Pride of life – self-exaltation, boasting, status-seeking.

‑ Examples: measuring worth by career, influence, or likes; talking more about accomplishments than God’s grace.

Practical Checkpoints

Ask in everyday decisions:

• Does this cultivate or compete with love for the Father? (Matthew 6:24)

• Would it survive the test of eternity? (1 Corinthians 3:13)

• Does it fuel fleshly appetite, visual coveting, or self-glory? (Galatians 5:16-17)

• Could I thank God wholeheartedly for it? (Colossians 3:17)

Anchoring Ourselves in Scripture

Romans 12:2—renew the mind to detect worldly patterns.

Philippians 4:8—dwell on whatever is true, honorable, just, pure.

Colossians 3:1-4—set hearts on things above, not earthly things.

Daily Practice of Discernment

• Inventory time, money, and attention each week; note what dominates.

• Fast periodically from media or purchases; observe cravings that surface.

• Invite trusted believers to speak into blind spots (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Replace worldly inputs with worship, service, and Scripture memorization.

Encouragement to Live Differently

“The world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God remains forever.” (1 John 2:17)

Identifying worldly things is ongoing, but every surrendered choice deepens fellowship with the Father and shines eternal light into a fading culture.
