How to trust God in tough times?
In what ways can we trust God during overwhelming circumstances today?

The Historical Backdrop

1 Kings 20 opens with Ben-hadad of Aram besieging Samaria with 32 allied kings—numbers that dwarf Israel’s resources. In the middle of the standoff God sends an unnamed prophet to announce victory for Israel, not because of their strength but to prove He is the LORD.

The Overwhelming Circumstance

1 Kings 20:17 records the first movement of Israel’s counter-attack:

“The young men of the district governors marched out first, and Ben-hadad sent out scouts who reported to him, ‘Men are marching out of Samaria.’”

Key observations:

• “Young men” (literally attendants) led the charge—hardly elite warriors.

• They “marched out first,” stepping into danger before any visible evidence of success.

• Their obedience triggered the fulfillment of God’s earlier promise (v. 13-14).

God’s Intervening Word

Before a single soldier advanced, God had already spoken:

1 Kings 20:13 — “This is what the LORD says: ‘Do you see this vast multitude? Behold, I will deliver it into your hand today, and you will know that I am the LORD.’”

Trust is rooted not in circumstances but in the unchanging word of God.

What Trust Looked Like Then

• Listening: Ahab heard and accepted the prophet’s message.

• Acting: The “young men” took literal steps onto the battlefield.

• Waiting: Israel’s main army followed only after the initial obedience (v. 19-20).

• Witnessing: God’s promise became visible as Aram fled and Ben-hadad barely escaped (v. 20-21).

How We Can Trust God Today

When situations feel insurmountable—health crises, financial strain, cultural hostility—the same principles apply:

1. Hear His Word

– Daily Scripture intake fixes our eyes on His proven promises.

Romans 10:17: “Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of Christ.”

2. Step Out First

– Obedience often precedes visible deliverance.

James 2:22 shows faith working together with actions.

3. Acknowledge Weakness

– God delights to work through “young men” and small numbers so His glory is unmistakable.

2 Corinthians 12:9: “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is perfected in weakness.”

4. Expect His Faithfulness

Psalm 46:1: “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble.”

Hebrews 13:8: “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.”

5. Give Testimony

– Israel’s victory testified that He is the LORD; our stories point others to the same reality.

1 Peter 2:9 calls us to “proclaim the excellencies of Him who called you out of darkness.”

Scriptures That Echo the Same Truth

Exodus 14:13-14 — Stand firm; the LORD will fight for you.

2 Chronicles 20:15 — The battle is not yours but God’s.

Isaiah 41:10 — “Do not fear, for I am with you… I will uphold you with My righteous right hand.”

Philippians 4:6-7 — Prayer replaces anxiety with peace that guards heart and mind.

Psalm 34:17-19 — The LORD delivers the righteous from all their troubles.

Putting It Into Practice

• Identify one overwhelming area in your life.

• Find a specific promise in Scripture that speaks to it.

• Share that promise with a trusted believer for accountability.

• Take one concrete step of obedience, however small, that aligns with trust in God.

• Record the outcome so you can recount His faithfulness later.

Trust during overwhelming circumstances is not wishful thinking; it is anchored in the character, promises, and proven track record of the living God who delivered Israel against impossible odds and still delivers His people today.
