How to uplift each other in church?
What are practical ways to "build one another up" within our church community?

Building Peace and Edification — Romans 14:19

“So then, let us pursue what leads to peace and to mutual edification.” (Romans 14:19)

The Call to Pursue Peace and Edification

Paul’s charge is active: “pursue.” We chase after anything that produces harmony and strengthens faith, never settling for mere avoidance of conflict (Romans 14:17–18; Ephesians 4:3).

Practical Ways to Build One Another Up

• Speak life-giving words (Ephesians 4:29).

• Encourage spiritual growth by stirring up love and good works (Hebrews 10:24-25).

• Share burdens and joys; “carry one another’s burdens” (Galatians 6:2; Romans 12:15).

• Practice hospitality—open homes, share meals, create safe space (1 Peter 4:9; Acts 2:46).

• Serve with your spiritual gifts for the common good (1 Corinthians 12:7; 1 Peter 4:10).

• Pray faithfully for each other (James 5:16; Colossians 4:12).

• Model humility and acceptance, pleasing others for their good (Romans 15:1-2; Philippians 2:3-4).

• Give generously to meet needs (2 Corinthians 9:6-8; Acts 4:34-35).

• Correct gently, restoring the one who stumbles (Galatians 6:1; 2 Timothy 2:25).

• Celebrate faithfulness—offer gratitude and affirmation (Philippians 1:3-6; 1 Thessalonians 1:2-3).

Cautions That Protect Unity

• Avoid quarrels over disputable matters (Romans 14:1).

• Steer clear of gossip and slander (Proverbs 16:28).

• Subordinate personal preferences to others’ edification (1 Corinthians 10:23-24).

• Keep a tender conscience toward weaker brothers and sisters (Romans 14:13-15).

A Lifestyle of Edification in Action

• Schedule weekly check-ins—texts, calls, or coffee.

• Join a small group that studies Scripture and prays together.

• Pair up in intergenerational mentoring—older saints with younger believers (Titus 2:3-7).

• Serve side-by-side in outreach; shared mission deepens fellowship (Philippians 1:27).

• Mark milestones—baptisms, anniversaries, answered prayers—publicly rejoicing together (Romans 12:10).

Encouragement from Christ’s Example

“For even Christ did not please Himself…” (Romans 15:3). His self-giving love shapes ours.

“By this everyone will know that you are My disciples, if you love one another.” (John 13:35)

Conclusion: Pursuing Peace Together

As each member commits to peace-pursuing, faith-strengthening actions, the church becomes a living picture of Romans 14:19—people who actively seek what builds up, reflects Christ, and draws others to the gospel.
