Identify and use spiritual gifts for God.
How can we discern and use our spiritual gifts for God's glory?

Setting the Stage

Romans 1:11: “For I long to see you so that I may impart to you some spiritual gift to strengthen you.”

Paul’s longing shows that gifts are concrete, transferable realities meant to build up believers, not abstract ideas or personal trophies.

What Are Spiritual Gifts?

• Abilities, empowerments, or ministries the Holy Spirit sovereignly distributes (1 Corinthians 12:4–11).

• Always rooted in grace (“charismata”)—unearned, undeserved.

• Designed for the common good, never mere self-expression (1 Corinthians 12:7; 1 Peter 4:10).

Why God Gives Gifts

• To strengthen the church (Romans 1:11).

• To display Christ’s fullness on earth (Ephesians 4:11-13).

• To bring glory to God through Jesus Christ (1 Peter 4:11).

Recognizing Your Gifts

• Scripture awareness: study every list—Romans 12:4-8; 1 Corinthians 12; Ephesians 4; 1 Peter 4.

• Inner witness: note recurring desires to serve in specific ways (Philippians 2:13).

• Fruit test: gifts bear spiritual fruit and edify others (Matthew 7:16; Galatians 5:22-23).

• Body affirmation: mature believers confirm what they see in you (Acts 13:2-3).

• Providence: open doors often match the gift God has placed in you (Revelation 3:8).

Practical Steps to Discernment

1. Present yourself fully to God (Romans 12:1-2).

2. Pray specifically for clarity (James 1:5).

3. Serve widely—needs reveal gifts (Acts 6:1-4).

4. Reflect afterward: where did you sense joy, anointing, and blessing to others?

5. Record patterns; seek counsel from leaders who know you (Proverbs 11:14).

Putting Gifts to Work

• Start small and faithful—God entrusts more as we steward what we have (Luke 16:10).

• Partner with complementary gifts; the body needs every part (1 Corinthians 12:21-26).

• Fan into flame what God has deposited (2 Timothy 1:6).

• Aim at specific strengthening: “Who will be built up if I use this gift today?”

Guardrails for Humble Service

• Love must govern all expressions (1 Corinthians 13:1-3).

• Submit to scriptural boundaries and church oversight (Hebrews 13:17).

• Avoid comparison; God apportions as He wills (1 Corinthians 12:11).

• Celebrate others’ gifts; their success is your body’s health (Romans 12:15).

Encouragement and Hope

The Lord who calls also equips. If He has saved you, He has gifted you, and He intends to strengthen His people through your obedience. Lean into His Word, listen to His Spirit, and watch Him glorify Himself as you serve.

In what ways can we strengthen each other's faith as Paul intended?
