Ignoring God: Spiritual impacts?
In what ways can ignoring God's voice lead to spiritual consequences?

The Setting of Psalm 81:8

“‘Hear, O My people, and I will admonish you: O Israel, if only you would listen to Me!’”

God speaks as a loving yet firm Father. The verse is both invitation and warning: listen, or suffer the fallout of ignoring His voice.

What Ignoring God’s Voice Looks Like

• Treating His commands as suggestions (James 1:22)

• Substituting tradition, culture, or personal preference for clear revelation (Mark 7:8)

• Delaying obedience, which is practical disobedience (Psalm 119:60)

Immediate Spiritual Consequences

• Hardened heart

Psalm 81:12 “So I gave them up to their stubborn hearts to follow their own devices.”

Hebrews 3:7-8 warns that repeated refusal calcifies the inner man.

• Loss of divine guidance

Proverbs 28:9: prayers become hindered when the law is ignored.

Isaiah 30:15-16: rejecting God’s counsel leaves us “pursued” and restless.

• Vulnerability to deception

2 Thessalonians 2:10-11 shows that those who refuse truth become susceptible to lies.

Long-Term Spiritual Consequences

• Withdrawal of God’s protective covering

Deuteronomy 32:20: “I will hide My face from them; I will see what their end will be.”

• Slavery to sin’s desires

Romans 1:24-25: God “gave them over” when they exchanged His truth for a lie.

• Diminished fruitfulness and joy

John 15:6: the branch that “does not remain” is withered and discarded.

• Missed blessings meant for obedience

Psalm 81:13-16 lists the abundance Israel forfeited: quick deliverance, finest wheat, honey from the rock.

Ripple Effects on Community and Witness

• Spiritual coldness spreads; disobedience begets more disobedience (Hosea 4:9).

• God’s glory is obscured; the watching world sees inconsistency rather than light (Matthew 5:14-16).

The Road Back When We’ve Tuned God Out

• Remember His faithfulness (Psalm 77:11-12).

• Repent—change mind and direction (Acts 3:19).

• Renew daily listening habits:

– Consistent Scripture intake (Psalm 119:105)

– Prompt, unquestioning obedience (John 14:21)

– Sensitivity to the Spirit’s promptings (Galatians 5:16-18)

• Rejoice in restored fellowship; God delights to answer the repentant (Isaiah 55:6-7).

Encouragement to Listen Today

Jesus affirmed, “My sheep listen to My voice; I know them, and they follow Me” (John 10:27). The safest, sweetest place is a heart quick to hear and eager to obey.

How does Psalm 81:8 connect with the First Commandment in Exodus 20:3?
