Inspire others to serve devotedly.
How can we encourage others to follow the example of devoted service?

Setting the Scene in Corinth

“Now I urge you, brothers, to submit to such as these and to every fellow worker and laborer.” (1 Corinthians 16:16)

Paul points to Stephanas and his household—real people whose tireless ministry stood out in the early church. The Spirit preserved their example so every generation could see what devoted service looks like in practice.

Recognizing Exemplary Servants

• Notice what set Stephanas apart:

– “the first converts in Achaia” (v. 15) – they began early and never slowed.

– “devoted themselves to the service of the saints” (v. 15) – not occasional volunteers, but lifelong servants.

• Scripture never treats such stories as mere history; they are living models we can point others to today.

Practical Ways to Encourage Imitation

• Celebrate faithfulness publicly

– Share testimonies of self-giving believers during gatherings (Hebrews 10:24).

• Highlight the joy, not just the labor

– “It is more blessed to give than to receive” (Acts 20:35). Show how service enlarges joy.

• Pair new believers with seasoned servants

– Paul sent Timothy to learn beside proven workers (Philippians 2:19-22). Mentoring multiplies ministry.

• Lead with personal submission

– When we willingly “submit to such as these,” we model humility that invites others to follow (1 Peter 5:3).

• Speak Scripture over service

– Remind workers that “God is not unjust; He will not forget your work” (Hebrews 6:10). The Word supplies motivation no pep talk can match.

The Heart Behind Submission

• Submission acknowledges God-given authority and gifting (Romans 13:7).

• It protects unity: instead of competing, we cheer one another on (Philippians 1:27).

• It frees us from self-promotion, letting Christ be seen (Matthew 20:26-28).

Encouraging others begins with our own willingness to honor faithful servants; that posture speaks louder than instructions alone.

Drawing Strength from Other Scriptures

2 Thessalonians 3:7-9 – Paul invites believers to “imitate us” because he lived what he taught.

Hebrews 13:7 – “Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith.”

Philippians 3:17 – “Join one another in following my example.”

Each reference reinforces that God intends living examples to shape living disciples.

Living It Out Together

• Identify at least one servant in your fellowship whose quiet faithfulness deserves gratitude.

• Express thanks in practical ways—notes, meals, shared testimonies.

• Invite others to join that servant in a specific task this week. Shared work breeds shared zeal.

• Keep pointing back to Christ, “who for the joy set before Him endured the cross” (Hebrews 12:2). Every earthly example ultimately mirrors Him, the Servant of all.

Why is it important to recognize and support those who 'labor among you'?
