Invite God's presence like Obed-edom?
How can we invite God's presence into our homes like Obed-edom did?

Obed-edom’s Open Door

2 Samuel 6:10 – 11 records a simple but life-changing decision:

“So he was unwilling to move the ark of the LORD to the city of David; instead, he took it aside to the house of Obed-edom the Gittite. Thus the ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-edom the Gittite three months, and the LORD blessed Obed-edom and all his household.”

What the Ark Signified

• The very throne of God on earth (Exodus 25:22)

• A tangible reminder of covenant promises and commandments (Hebrews 9:4)

• A call to holiness—Uzzah’s death showed casual treatment brings judgment (2 Samuel 6:6-7)

Postures That Prepared His House

• Reverence—Obed-edom honored what others feared

• Readiness—room, time, and attention were set apart for the Ark

• Responsibility—he and his family served as gatekeepers afterward (1 Chronicles 26:4-8)

Inviting God’s Presence in Our Homes Today

1. Cultivate reverent worship

• “Yet You are holy, enthroned on the praises of Israel.” (Psalm 22:3)

• Play and sing Scripture-filled songs; let praise set the atmosphere.

2. Elevate God’s Word

Joshua 1:8; Deuteronomy 6:6-7

• Keep Bibles open on tables, read aloud at meals, memorize verses together.

3. Walk in obedience and purity

John 14:23; Psalm 24:3-4

• Remove known sin, reconcile quickly, keep media choices clean.

4. Practice constant prayer

Acts 10 shows Cornelius’s prayers drew divine visitation.

• Pray when you wake, drive, cook, or tuck in children.

5. Extend hospitable faith

Revelation 3:20—open every “room” to Christ: finances, schedule, relationships.

• Welcome fellow believers; God often arrives with His people (Matthew 18:20).

6. Dedicate belongings for His use

• Houses, cars, screens, and hobbies can serve kingdom purposes when surrendered.

The Overflow of Blessing

• Spiritual—heightened sensitivity to God’s voice (John 10:27)

• Relational—peace replaces strife; forgiveness flows more freely

• Material—God may supply unexpected provision as with Obed-edom (2 Samuel 6:11)

• Generational—his sons became mighty men and temple guardians (1 Chronicles 26:8)

□ Place a verse card in each main room

□ Identify one habit to repent of and replace with prayer
