Isaiah 51:23's comfort for persecuted?
How can Isaiah 51:23 encourage believers facing persecution today?

Isaiah 51:23

“I will put it into the hand of your tormentors, who said to you, ‘Lie down that we may walk over you.’ And you made your back like the ground, and like a street for them to pass over.”

Understanding the Picture

• God speaks to a people who had literally been stepped on by oppressors.

• The “cup” of suffering is removed from the believer and pressed into the hand of the persecutor.

• The verse conveys a dramatic role reversal—God Himself executes justice.

How This Promises Hope to Persecuted Believers Today

• God sees every humiliation

Psalm 56:8: “Put my tears in Your bottle—are they not in Your book?”

– No act of abuse is missed or forgotten by Him.

• God limits the duration of suffering

1 Peter 5:10: “After you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace… will Himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you.”

– The “cup” is not bottomless; God determines when it is taken away.

• God personally vindicates His people

Romans 12:19: “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay, says the Lord.”

2 Thessalonians 1:6-7: “God is just: He will repay trouble to those who trouble you and give relief to you who are troubled.”

– Believers need not retaliate; they can rest in God’s certain justice.

• God reverses oppression into triumph

Psalm 18:17: “He rescued me... for they were too mighty for me.”

Revelation 18:6 shows God forcing Babylon to drink double of the cup she poured out. Persecutors reap what they sow.

• God turns shame into a platform for His glory

Isaiah 54:17: “No weapon formed against you shall prosper... This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD.”

John 16:33: “In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.”

Living This Encouragement Now

• Keep a long view—justice may wait, but it will not fail.

• Release the desire for revenge; entrust your case to the righteous Judge.

• Draw strength from Christ’s own path: He was trampled (Isaiah 53), yet now reigns. So will those who endure with Him (2 Timothy 2:12).

• Encourage one another with these promises, knowing that God’s final word to every persecutor is the same as Isaiah 51:23: the cup returns to their own hand.
