Link 1 Peter 3:19 & Eph 4:8-10 on descent.
How does 1 Peter 3:19 connect with Ephesians 4:8-10 about Christ's descent?

The Texts Side by Side

1 Peter 3:19 – “in whom He also went and preached to the spirits in prison”

Ephesians 4:8-10 – “Therefore it says: ‘When He ascended on high, He led captives away, and gave gifts to men.’ (What does ‘He ascended’ mean except that He also descended to the lower parts of the earth?) He who descended is the very One who ascended far above all the heavens, in order to fill all things.”

Reading the Same Journey from Two Angles

• 1 Peter looks downward: Christ “went and preached” in the realm where spirits were confined.

• Ephesians looks upward: the One who first “descended” later “ascended,” bringing captives with Him.

Taken together, the descent of verse 9 in Ephesians is the same visit Peter describes; the ascent of verse 8 is the sequel.

Step One: Descent into the Lower Parts

Luke 23:43 – Jesus promised the repentant thief, “Today you will be with Me in paradise,” showing conscious presence in the unseen realm.

Acts 2:27 – Peter quotes Psalm 16 concerning Christ: “You will not abandon My soul to Hades.”

• Between death and resurrection Jesus truly entered “the lower parts of the earth,” the abode of the dead (Hades/Sheol).

Step Two: Proclamation to the Spirits in Prison

1 Peter 3:19 – He “preached” (Greek kerusso: announce, proclaim) to “spirits” kept “in prison” since the flood (v. 20).

– These are not human souls awaiting salvation but rebellious angelic beings (cf. 2 Peter 2:4; Jude 6).

Colossians 2:15 – “Having disarmed the rulers and authorities, He made a public spectacle of them, triumphing over them by the cross.”

• The message was victory, not invitation: their defeat is sealed.

Step Three: Liberation and Ascent

Ephesians 4:8 – “He led captives away.” The captives are the righteous dead who had been comforted in “Abraham’s bosom” (Luke 16:22).

Psalm 68:18 (quoted by Paul) pictures a king returning with former captives now part of His triumphal procession.

Revelation 1:18 – Jesus now holds “the keys of Death and of Hades,” proof that He emptied Paradise and transferred the redeemed to heaven (2 Corinthians 5:8; Philippians 1:23).

How the Two Passages Interlock

1. Same timeline

– Death ➔ descent (1 Peter 3:19; Ephesians 4:9)

– Proclamation/victory ➔ liberation ➔ resurrection ➔ ascension (Ephesians 4:8,10)

2. Same location

– “Spirits in prison” = realm of the dead, the “lower parts of the earth.”

3. Same outcome

– Defeat of demonic rebels (1 Peter 3:22).

– Release of the faithful and distribution of gifts to the Church (Ephesians 4:8,11-12).

Why It Matters Today

• Assurance: Our Redeemer has already walked through death and emptied its jail cells.

• Confidence in evangelism: The Gospel we share is certified by Christ’s cosmic victory.

• Hope in grief: Believers who die are now “at home with the Lord” (2 Corinthians 5:8), never again confined below.

How can understanding 1 Peter 3:19 deepen our faith in Christ's victory?
