Link Deut 10:12 to Jesus' teachings?
How does Deuteronomy 10:12 connect with Jesus' teachings in the New Testament?

The heart of Deuteronomy 10:12

• “And now, Israel, what does the LORD your God ask of you but to fear the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, to love Him, to serve the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul.” (Deuteronomy 10:12)

• Four commands shine through:

– Fear the LORD

– Walk in His ways

– Love Him

– Serve Him with all your heart and soul

• Jesus takes these same themes and places them at the very center of His kingdom teaching.

Fear the Lord—Jesus affirms reverent awe

• Jesus warns: “Do not be afraid of those who kill the body … fear the One who can destroy both soul and body in hell.” (Matthew 10:28)

• This echoes Deuteronomy’s call to keep God on the throne of our hearts, honoring His holiness above every earthly threat.

• In both Testaments, true fear is not terror that drives us from God, but reverent awe that draws us to obedience.

Walk in His ways—Jesus as the Way

• “I am the way and the truth and the life.” (John 14:6)

• To “walk in all His ways” now means following Jesus Himself—daily ordering life around His words, example, and indwelling Spirit.

• Jesus invites: “If anyone wants to come after Me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow Me.” (Luke 9:23)

Love Him—Jesus makes love the greatest command

• Jesus quotes Israel’s Shema and expands it: “ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ ” (Matthew 22:37)

• Love is not abstract sentiment; it is covenant loyalty expressed in obedient action: “If you love Me, you will keep My commandments.” (John 14:15)

• Jesus keeps Deuteronomy’s emphasis and intensifies it by centering that love on His own person.

Serve with all your heart and soul—Jesus models true service

• “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many.” (Mark 10:45)

• He washes feet (John 13) and calls His followers to the same humble, wholehearted service.

• Under the new covenant, serving the Lord includes serving His body, the church, in Spirit-empowered love.

Putting it together—Living the covenant in Christ

Deuteronomy 10:12 presents the covenant essentials; Jesus embodies and amplifies each one.

• In Him we:

– Fear God with holy awe, confident of grace.

– Walk in the Way who is Christ, empowered by His Spirit.

– Love God supremely, demonstrated through obedience.

– Serve wholeheartedly, following the servant-King.

• The Old Testament summons and the New Testament fulfillment unite, calling believers to a life of total devotion—heart, soul, mind, and strength—centered on Jesus.

What does it mean to 'walk in all His ways' practically?
