Luke 20:14: Rejecting God's authority?
How does Luke 20:14 illustrate human rejection of God's authority in our lives?

Setting the Scene: The Vineyard Parable

Luke 20:14—“But when the tenants saw the son, they discussed it among themselves and said, ‘This is the heir. Let us kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.’”

• The owner = God

• The vineyard = Israel (and by extension, all the privileges God entrusts)

• The tenants = religious leaders (and anyone granted stewardship)

• The son = Jesus, God’s unique, beloved Heir (v. 13)

Tenants’ Calculus: The Core of Rebellion

• They recognize the son’s identity yet still scheme to eliminate him.

• They crave ownership without accountability: “the inheritance will be ours.”

• They assume the owner is distant or powerless to respond.

• Their plot is deliberate, not accidental—a willful suppression of truth (cf. Romans 1:18–21).

What the Tenants Reveal About Us

• We can acknowledge God intellectually and still resist His rule.

• We may desire God’s blessings (the vineyard) while rejecting His Lordship (the Son).

• Self-sovereignty feels attractive: “If I remove God’s claim, I can run life my way.”

Rejecting God’s Authority in Daily Life

• Clinging to sinful habits we know Scripture condemns (James 4:17).

• Refusing to forgive though commanded (Ephesians 4:32).

• Making major decisions with no prayer or biblical consultation (Proverbs 3:5-6).

• Treating resources, time, or relationships as solely ours instead of stewardships (1 Corinthians 4:7).

Scripture Echoes of Rebellion

Psalm 2:2-3—“The kings of the earth take their stand…‘Let us break Their chains.’”

John 1:11—“He came to His own, and His own did not receive Him.”

Acts 4:11—“Jesus is ‘the stone you builders rejected…’”

Hebrews 10:29 warns of trampling the Son underfoot.

Consequences of Rejection

Luke 20:15-16—The owner “will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others.”

Romans 6:23—“The wages of sin is death.”

• Loss of fruitfulness now; eternal separation later (Matthew 7:19).

Christ’s Unshakeable Authority

Matthew 28:18—“All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to Me.”

Colossians 1:16-17—All things were created through Him and for Him.

Revelation 19:16—He returns as “King of kings and Lord of lords.”

Living in Submission, Not Rebellion

• Acknowledge Jesus as rightful Heir daily (Luke 9:23).

• Surrender plans and possessions—“Your will be done” (Matthew 6:10).

• Cultivate thankfulness that stewardship is a privilege, not a burden (1 Peter 4:10).

• Obey promptly; delayed obedience often morphs into disobedience (Psalm 119:60).
