Matthew 22:37's role in Christian choices?
How can Matthew 22:37 guide our priorities and decisions as Christians?

Setting the Stage

“ ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.’ ” (Matthew 22:37)

Spoken by Jesus in response to a scribe’s query about “the great commandment,” these words summarize the entire Law and Prophets (v. 40). When they grip us, they reorder every sphere of life.

Whole-Person Love

• Heart – the seat of affection and desire.

• Soul – the core of identity and life-breath.

• Mind – the faculty of thought, reason, and planning.

Since Jesus names each element, no corner of our being is exempt. Our feelings, self-consciousness, and intellect line up under one governing passion: love for God.

Reordering Daily Priorities

1. Worship before work

• Begin the day acknowledging God’s worth (Psalm 5:3).

• Schedule time in the Word; everything else adjusts around it.

2. Relationships through a God-first lens

• Spouse, children, friends, coworkers—all loved best when God is loved most (1 John 4:19).

• Examine motives: am I pleasing Him or merely people? (Galatians 1:10).

3. Stewardship of resources

• Finances: firstfruits to the Lord (Proverbs 3:9-10).

• Time: Sabbath rest and service (Exodus 20:8-11; 1 Peter 4:10).

• Talents: employ gifts for building Christ’s body, not self-promotion (1 Corinthians 12:7).

A Decision-Making Grid

• Does this choice enhance my love for God or erode it?

• Will it draw my heart, soul, and mind closer to Him?

• Does it align with revealed commands (John 14:15)?

Run every fork-in-the-road through that grid. If a proposed path dulls affection for God, it’s a detour.

Practical Application Pointers

• Heart: keep a gratitude journal—thanksgiving fans affection into flame (Psalm 103:1-5).

• Soul: practice regular self-examination under Scripture’s light (Psalm 139:23-24).

• Mind: memorize and meditate on verses that showcase God’s character (Joshua 1:8).

Scriptural Echoes

Deuteronomy 6:5 – the original commandment Jesus quotes.

Psalm 27:4 – David’s single desire.

Colossians 3:17 – “whatever you do… do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus.”

Romans 12:1-2 – presenting bodies as living sacrifices; minds transformed to discern God’s will.

Living the Verse

Loving God with heart, soul, and mind is not an abstract ideal; it is the compass for every priority and decision. Keep the compass calibrated, and the path of faithful obedience becomes clear—even in the ordinary rhythms of tomorrow morning.

In what ways can we love God with 'all your mind' today?
