Modern idols vs God: Isaiah 46:5?
What idols today might we wrongly compare to God, as warned in Isaiah 46:5?

\Setting the Scene\

“ ‘To whom will you liken Me or count Me equal? To whom will you compare Me, that we should be alike?’ ” (Isaiah 46:5).

God’s question exposes a heart issue that never changes: people keep looking for something—anything—to rival Him. He will share His glory with no substitute (Isaiah 42:8).

\Why the Warning Still Applies\

• Idolatry is not only a statue problem; it is a loyalty problem.

• Whatever captures ultimate trust, love, or obedience can quietly edge God aside (Exodus 20:3–4; 1 John 5:21).

• Jesus reaffirms the danger: “No one can serve two masters” (Matthew 6:24).

\Modern Idols We May Compare to God\

• Money & Materialism—bank accounts, investments, shopping sprees that promise security or identity.

• Career & Achievement—titles, résumés, degrees treated as the source of worth.

• Technology—devices, apps, data, and the belief that innovation can solve every human need.

• Entertainment & Celebrity Culture—streaming, sports, influencers whose opinions shape convictions more than Scripture.

• Self & Autonomy—personal freedom elevated above God’s commands, “my truth” replacing His truth.

• Political Power & Ideology—party platforms trusted to usher in salvation-like change.

• Relationships—spouses, children, friends expected to meet needs only God can fill.

• Comfort & Security—retirement plans, gated communities, and risk-free living pursued instead of kingdom adventure.

• Social Media Approval—likes, followers, and algorithms dictating identity.

• Religion Without Relationship—rituals, traditions, or church programs prized more than knowing the Lord Himself.

\Why These Idols Seem Attractive\

• They offer immediate gratification or tangible results.

• Culture praises them as respectable or even essential.

• They appeal to fleshly desires for control, pleasure, or recognition.

• They demand less surrender than wholehearted discipleship.

\How God Stands Apart\

• Sovereign Creator—“I am the First and I am the Last; there is no God but Me” (Isaiah 44:6).

• Unmatched Power—“The nations are a drop in a bucket” before Him (Isaiah 40:15).

• Living and Speaking—idols “have mouths, but cannot speak” (Psalm 115:4–8), yet “the word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8).

• Eternal Savior—“I am the Alpha and the Omega…who is, and who was, and who is to come” (Revelation 1:8).

\Responding with Trust and Worship\

• Examine where time, money, and thoughts flow; redirect them to Christ.

• Confess and forsake any rival loyalties (Proverbs 28:13).

• Fill the mind with Scripture, letting truth expose counterfeit hopes (Romans 12:2).

• Choose practices that magnify God: generous giving, Sabbath rest, corporate worship, serving others.

• Anchor identity in Him alone—“You are not your own; you were bought at a price” (1 Corinthians 6:19–20).
