Obedience's role in God's promises?
What role does obedience play in receiving God's promises, as seen in Joshua 13?

Setting the Scene of Joshua 13

• Israel stands at a pivotal moment. The major fighting is over, but pockets of resistance remain.

• God instructs Joshua to allot the land even while some territory is still unconquered (Joshua 13:1-7).

• The promise to Abraham—land for his descendants (Genesis 12:7)—is being honored piece by piece. Yet possession hinges on continued obedience.

Spotlight on Joshua 13:19

“Kirjathaim, Sibmah, Zereth-shahar on the hill in the valley”.

• This simple verse lists towns given to the tribe of Reuben.

• Each town represents concrete evidence that God keeps His word.

• The allocation is not random; it follows the victories Israel achieved by trusting and obeying the Lord’s battle instructions (Joshua 6 – 12).

• Obedience turned divine promise into tangible real estate—vineyards, wells, grazing land, and homes.

A Promise Kept Through Obedience

• God’s covenant with Israel always pairs promise with responsibility.

Exodus 19:5: “If you indeed obey My voice… you will be My treasured possession.”

Deuteronomy 28:1: “If you fully obey… the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth.”

• In Joshua, Israel’s faith-fueled obedience (marching around Jericho, honoring the ban, following the ark across the Jordan) unlocks each stage of inheritance.

• Where obedience faltered, progress stalled (Joshua 7, defeat at Ai).

Patterns of Obedience in the Conquest

1. Listening first

– Joshua sought God’s strategy for Jericho (Joshua 6:2-5).

2. Acting precisely

– The priests, trumpets, and daily marches were carried out “just as the LORD had commanded.”

3. Removing compromise

– Achan’s sin illustrated how disobedience jeopardized the entire community (Joshua 7:11-12).

4. Persevering until completion

– Even elderly Caleb asked for the hill country still ruled by giants because God had promised it (Joshua 14:12).

Each step of surrendered obedience released another portion of the promised land.

New Testament Echoes

John 14:23: “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word… We will come to him and make Our home with him.”

Hebrews 6:12: “Imitate those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.”

James 1:25: “The one who looks intently… and continues in it… this man will be blessed in what he does.”

The pattern never changes: obedience is not a work earning favor; it is the God-enabled response that positions believers to receive what He delights to give.

Living It Out Today

• Identify the “land” God has promised—victory over sin, spiritual gifts, fruitful ministry.

• Seek His specific instructions in Scripture; obey promptly and exactly.

• Remove anything—habit, attitude, or relationship—that contradicts His Word.

• Persevere. Caleb waited forty-five years; the faithful will reap “at the proper time” if they do not give up (Galatians 6:9).

Every town in Joshua 13, including those named in verse 19, stands as a milestone of obedience rewarded. God’s promises are sure, yet He invites His people to walk them out step by step, trusting that He finishes what He starts.

How should we apply the concept of divine inheritance in our spiritual lives?
