Acts 20:19 — Paul’s Pattern of Service

“I served the Lord with great humility and with tears, and in the trials caused by the plots of the Jews.”

Humility — The Posture God Honors

- Philippians 2:3-4 — “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or empty pride, but in humility consider others more important than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”

- Philippians 2:5-8 — Christ’s own example: He “emptied Himself, taking the form of a servant… He humbled Himself and became obedient to death.”

- 1 Peter 5:5-6 — “Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because ‘God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.’ Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand, so that in due time He may exalt you.”

- James 4:6, 10 — “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble… Humble yourselves before the Lord, and He will exalt you.”

- Micah 6:8 — “What does the LORD require of you but to act justly, to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God?”

- Matthew 11:29 — “Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me; for I am gentle and humble in heart.”

- Luke 22:26 — “The greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the leader like the servant.”

- Mark 10:43-45 — “Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant… for even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve.”

- Numbers 12:3 — “Moses was a very humble man, more so than any man on the face of the earth.”

Perseverance — The Endurance God Enables

- Hebrews 12:1-3 — “Let us run with endurance the race set out for us… Consider Him who endured such hostility from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”

- Galatians 6:9 — “Let us not grow weary in well-doing, for in due time we will reap a harvest, if we do not give up.”

- 2 Corinthians 4:1 — “Since we have this ministry through the mercy of God, we do not lose heart.”

- 2 Corinthians 4:16 — “Though our outer self is wasting away, yet our inner self is being renewed day by day.”

- James 1:2-4 — “The testing of your faith develops perseverance. Allow perseverance to finish its work so that you may be mature and complete.”

- Romans 5:3-5 — “Suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”

- Revelation 2:10 — “Be faithful even unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

- 2 Thessalonians 3:13 — “Brothers, do not grow weary in doing good.”

- 1 Corinthians 15:58 — “Be steadfast, immovable, always excelling in the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

Humility and Perseverance Woven Together

- 2 Corinthians 4:5-7 — “We do not preach ourselves, but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your servants for Jesus’ sake… we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this surpassingly great power is from God and not from us.”

- 2 Timothy 2:24-25 — “The Lord’s servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone… correcting his opponents with gentleness.”

Both passages show humble self-view and unflagging resolve living side by side.

Living It Out Today

- Start each task conscious that you are a servant, not the master.

- Measure success by faithfulness, not applause.

- Welcome trials as training grounds for endurance.

- Keep your eyes on Jesus—the ultimate model of lowliness and steadfastness.

- Encourage fellow believers: remind one another that “our labor in the Lord is not in vain.”
