Other scriptures on pride?
Which other scriptures warn against similar attitudes of self-sufficiency and pride?

The Babylon Syndrome in Isaiah 47:8

“Now then, hear this, you lover of pleasure, who sits securely, who says in your heart, ‘I am, and there is none besides me. I will never be a widow or know the loss of children.’”

The Lord exposes Babylon’s boast: unshakable self-confidence, delight in pleasure, and the delusion that nothing and no one can touch her.

Old Testament Voices Echo the Warning

Deuteronomy 8:17-18 — “You might say in your heart, ‘The power and strength of my hands have made this wealth for me.’ But remember that it is the LORD your God who gives you the power to gain wealth …”

Jeremiah 9:23-24 — “Let not the wise man boast in his wisdom, nor the mighty man boast in his strength, nor the rich man boast in his riches. But let him who boasts boast in this, that he understands and knows Me …”

• Obadiah 3-4 — “The pride of your heart has deceived you … You who say in your heart, ‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’ … even from there I will bring you down, declares the LORD.”

Habakkuk 2:4-5 — “Behold, the proud one; his soul is not upright—but the righteous will live by faith … a haughty man … gathers to himself all nations.”

2 Chronicles 26:16 — “But after Uzziah became strong, his pride led to his downfall.”

Psalm 49:6 — “They trust in their wealth and boast of great riches.”

New Testament Amplifications

Luke 12:19-21 — “Then I will say to myself, ‘You have plenty of good things laid up for many years. Take life easy; eat, drink, and be merry.’ But God said to him, ‘You fool! This very night your life will be required of you …’ So it is with the one who stores up treasure for himself and is not rich toward God.”

James 4:13-16 — “Come now, you who say, ‘Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city …’ You do not know what tomorrow will bring … As it is, you boast in your proud intentions. All such boasting is evil.”

Revelation 3:17 — “You say, ‘I am rich; I have grown wealthy and need nothing.’ But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.”

1 Corinthians 10:12 — “So the one who thinks he is standing firm should be careful not to fall.”

1 Peter 5:5-6 — “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble. Humble yourselves, therefore, under God’s mighty hand …”

Tracing the Thread

• Self-sufficiency blinds people to their dependence on God (Deuteronomy 8; Revelation 3).

• Pride invites certain downfall (Proverbs 16; 1 Corinthians 10).

• Boasting in possessions or plans usurps God’s rightful place (Luke 12; James 4).

• True security is found only in knowing and exalting the Lord (Jeremiah 9).

From Babylon’s bravado to Laodicea’s lukewarm boasting, Scripture speaks with one voice: trading humility and trust for self-reliance sets the stage for ruin, while heartfelt dependence on the Lord ushers in His sustaining grace.

How can we guard against the arrogance described in Isaiah 47:8?
