Past deliverance: boost faith now?
How can acknowledging God's past deliverance strengthen our faith in current challenges?

Setting the Scene: Daniel’s Prayer

“Now, Lord our God, who brought Your people out of the land of Egypt with a mighty hand and who made for Yourself a name renowned to this day—we have sinned; we have acted wickedly.” (Daniel 9:15)

Why Daniel Looks Back

• Daniel is in exile, facing national collapse, yet he deliberately recalls the literal Exodus.

• He anchors his confession and appeal in God’s undeniable track record: the Red Sea really opened, Pharaoh’s army really drowned, Israel really walked out free.

• By rehearsing that deliverance, Daniel turns past history into present courage.

Linking Past Deliverance to Present Faith

• God’s works are never merely historical facts; they are living testimonies that set the standard for what He can do again (Psalm 77:11-15).

• Remembered salvation fuels hope: “This I recall to my mind; therefore I have hope” (Lamentations 3:21-23).

• Paul uses the same pattern: “He has delivered us… He will deliver us again” (2 Corinthians 1:10).

Scriptural Threads That Reinforce the Pattern

Exodus 14:13-14 – Moses urges Israel to “stand still” because the God who defeated Egypt will finish the job.

Deuteronomy 7:17-19 – Israel is told to replay the Exodus in their minds whenever new enemies arise.

Psalm 103:2 – “Forget not all His benefits” is a command, not a suggestion.

Revelation 12:11 – Future saints overcome “by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony,” echoing this same remembering practice.

What Remembering Practically Does

• Reframes current threats as temporary, because the God who conquered before has not changed (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8).

• Turns fear into worship—our focus shifts from the size of the crisis to the size of the Deliverer.

• Breeds repentance and humility, just as Daniel’s recollection led him to confess sin, opening the way for renewed fellowship.

• Sparks corporate unity: shared stories of deliverance bind families, churches, and nations together around God’s faithfulness.

Building a Lifestyle of Remembrance

• Keep a written record of answered prayers and breakthroughs.

• Read aloud the great deliverance passages—Exodus 14, Judges 7, 1 Samuel 17—as personal history, not distant legend.

• Celebrate milestones with tangible symbols (stones of remembrance in Joshua 4).

• Testify regularly; every retelling reinforces faith for the next challenge.

Living Today in Light of Yesterday’s Miracles

• Identify the “Egypt” God has already brought you out of—salvation, provision, healing, restored relationships.

• Speak those memories into present tensions; let yesterday’s rescue narrate today’s storyline.

• Expect God’s character to remain consistent: He still hears, sees, and intervenes with a “mighty hand.”

Walking Forward in Confidence

Acknowledge the literal, historical acts of God; let them reshape your perspective. Like Daniel, you can face any present crisis by anchoring your heart in the concrete, unchanging record of divine deliverance. Yesterday’s victories are the down payment on tomorrow’s breakthroughs.
