Prepare for God's surprises, like Acts 10:3?
How should we prepare ourselves for God's unexpected revelations, like in Acts 10:3?

Setting the Scene

Acts 10:3: “About the ninth hour of the day he clearly saw in a vision an angel of God who came to him and said, ‘Cornelius!’”

Cornelius had no idea this visitation was coming, yet he was ready to receive it. His example teaches how to posture ourselves for God’s surprises.

Why God Chooses the Prepared Heart

Psalm 25:14—“The LORD confides in those who fear Him.”

Isaiah 66:2—“This is the one I will esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at My word.”

John 14:21—“Whoever has My commandments and keeps them is the one who loves Me… I will reveal Myself to him.”

These verses show a consistent pattern: reverence, obedience, and love open the door to divine revelation.

Steps to Spiritual Readiness

1. Pursue a life of devotion

Acts 10:2 describes Cornelius as “devout and God-fearing.”

• Daily worship, Scripture reading, and consistent church fellowship keep the heart soft (Psalm 119:18).

2. Persist in prayer

Acts 10:2 again: “He prayed to God continually.”

Colossians 4:2—“Devote yourselves to prayer, being watchful and thankful.”

• Prayer tunes spiritual ears to hear God’s unexpected directives.

3. Practice generous obedience

• Cornelius “gave alms generously to the people” (Acts 10:2).

Proverbs 19:17—“Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the LORD.”

• Tangible obedience demonstrates faith that God honors with further light (Matthew 25:23).

4. Cultivate humility and teachability

Proverbs 3:5-6—“Trust in the LORD with all your heart… He will make your paths straight.”

• A pliable spirit welcomes instruction, even when it disrupts preconceived plans.

5. Keep short accounts with God

Psalm 139:23-24—“Search me, O God… lead me in the way everlasting.”

• Confession and repentance remove static that can dull spiritual reception.

Guardrails for Discernment

• Test every revelation by Scripture (Acts 17:11; 1 Thessalonians 5:19-21). God never contradicts Himself.

• Seek confirmation through mature believers (Proverbs 11:14).

• Look for the fruit of righteousness and peace (James 3:17).

Living in Expectation

Amos 3:7—“Surely the Lord GOD does nothing without revealing His plan to His servants the prophets.”

• Stay alert: “Blessed are those servants whom the master finds on watch when he returns” (Luke 12:37).

• Act promptly when God speaks; delayed obedience is disobedience (James 4:17).

Prepared hearts—devoted, prayerful, obedient, humble, and discerning—position themselves to receive God’s sudden revelations and to walk in them with confidence and joy.
