Prevent awful acts in our community?
How can we guard against "appalling and horrible" deeds in our community?

Setting the Scene

“An appalling and horrible thing has happened in the land: the prophets prophesy falsely and the priests rule by their own authority, and My people love it this way. But what will you do in the end?” (Jeremiah 5:30-31)

Diagnosing the Problem

• False voices shape the culture: prophets speak lies.

• Spiritual leaders misuse authority.

• The people willingly accept it.

• Outcome: a community ripe for judgment.

Why This Matters Today

• Deceptive teaching still creeps into pulpits, screens, and conversations.

• Authority figures may drift from God’s Word to personal agendas.

• Society applauds what God calls sin (Isaiah 5:20).

• If unchecked, the church absorbs the same decay (1 Corinthians 15:33).

God’s Safeguards

1. Saturate Everything with Scripture

• “Every word of God is flawless” (Proverbs 30:5).

• Measure sermons, books, podcasts, and policies against the written Word.

• Encourage daily, literal reading of the Bible—whole books, not isolated snippets.

2. Discern Voices of Influence

• “Test all things. Hold fast to what is good; abstain from every form of evil.” (1 Thessalonians 5:21-22)

• Verify credentials: do leaders exalt Christ or self?

• Watch fruit: “You will recognize them by their fruit.” (Matthew 7:16)

3. Restore Biblical Authority in Leadership

• Elders and pastors must cling to sound doctrine (Titus 1:9).

• Decision-making boards consult Scripture first, trends second.

• Public correction when teaching strays (Galatians 2:14).

4. Cultivate a People Who Love Truth More Than Comfort

• “The time will come when men will not tolerate sound doctrine…they will gather teachers to suit their own desires.” (2 Timothy 4:3-4)

• Celebrate repentance stories, not just success stories.

• Equip members to confront sin lovingly (Matthew 18:15-17).

5. Practice Obedient Hearing

• “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22)

• Small-group accountability: report obedience, not merely insights.

• Community projects that apply Scripture—caring for widows, defending the unborn, honoring marriage.

6. Pray for and Protect Spiritual Clarity

• Though not a magic formula, fasting and prayer sharpen discernment (Acts 13:2-3).

• Shield the next generation through family worship and catechism (Deuteronomy 6:6-7).

The Promised Result

When Scripture reigns, leaders submit, and people obey, “the righteous shine like the sun in the kingdom of their Father” (Matthew 13:43). Appalling deeds lose their footing, and the community becomes a beacon of truth and holiness.
