Prevent inner rebellion today?
How can we guard against rebellion in our own hearts today?

The Scene Behind 1 Kings 11:26

“Now Jeroboam son of Nebat, an Ephraimite from Zeredah whose mother’s name was Zeruah, a widow, also rebelled against Solomon.”

Solomon’s divided heart (v. 4) had already opened the door to unrest in Israel; Jeroboam simply walked through it. His story reminds us that rebellion often begins quietly, takes root internally, and eventually surfaces in destructive action.

Why Rebellion Takes Root in Us

• Ignoring God’s clear commands (1 Kings 11:10; John 14:15)

• Envy of another’s position or blessing (1 Kings 11:28; James 3:16)

• Pride in personal gifting or opportunity (Proverbs 16:18)

• A lingering grievance that turns into bitterness (Hebrews 12:15)

Guardrails That Keep the Heart Loyal

1. Submit to Scripture without reserve

 • “Your word I have hidden in my heart that I might not sin against You.” (Psalm 119:11)

 • “Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.” (James 1:22)

2. Cultivate humility daily

 • “He must increase; I must decrease.” (John 3:30)

 • “With humility come wisdom.” (Proverbs 11:2)

3. Stay accountable in fellowship

 • “Encourage one another daily…so that none of you may be hardened by sin’s deceitfulness.” (Hebrews 3:13)

 • “Two are better than one…if either of them falls, the one can lift up his companion.” (Ecclesiastes 4:9-10)

4. Practice immediate repentance

 • “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9)

 • “Rebellion is like the sin of divination, and arrogance like the evil of idolatry.” (1 Samuel 15:23)

5. Choose grateful worship over grumbling

 • “Do all things without complaining or arguing.” (Philippians 2:14)

 • “Give thanks in every circumstance; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” (1 Thessalonians 5:18)

Daily Habits That Strengthen Obedience

• Begin and end each day in the Word (Joshua 1:8)

• Memorize key passages on submission (James 4:7)

• Sing or listen to Christ-exalting music (Colossians 3:16)

• Serve others in small, hidden ways (Mark 10:45)

• Retell God’s faithfulness to family and friends (Psalm 145:4)

Promises and Warnings to Remember

• Promise: “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.” (James 4:8)

• Promise: “The LORD is near to the broken-hearted and saves the crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)

• Warning: “Take care, brothers, that none of you has a wicked, unbelieving heart that turns away from the living God.” (Hebrews 3:12)

• Warning: “Whoever remains stiff-necked after many rebukes will suddenly be destroyed—without remedy.” (Proverbs 29:1)

Walking Forward

Jeroboam’s path shows how unchecked pride and discontent flower into open revolt. By planting humility, accountability, gratitude, and constant intake of God’s Word, we place holy hedges around our hearts. Rebellion may knock, but it finds no unlocked door.
