Psalm 74:18's guidance on revilers?
How can Psalm 74:18 guide our response to those who "revile Your name"?

Setting the Scene

Psalm 74 records Asaph’s grief after enemies devastated the sanctuary and “a foolish people has spurned Your name” (v. 18). The psalm models how believers can respond when God’s name is mocked today.

What “Remember” Invites

• “Remember…” (v. 18) is not informing God of what He forgot—it is a covenant appeal, urging Him to act in faithfulness to His character and promises (cf. Exodus 2:24).

• It calls us to bring every insult against God to Him first, rather than answering in fleshly anger.

Guarding a Holy Jealousy for God’s Honor

• Scripture commands zeal for His name: “Hallowed be Your name” (Matthew 6:9).

• Like Phinehas, whose “zeal… turned My wrath away” (Numbers 25:11), we value God’s reputation above personal comfort.

• Yet we keep that zeal within the bounds of love (1 Colossians 13:1–3).

Practical Ways to Respond When God Is Reviled

1. Pray Before You Speak

• Present the mockery to the Lord, asking Him to vindicate His name (Psalm 74:18,22).

• Pray for those who blaspheme (Luke 23:34).

2. Guard Personal Holiness

• Hypocrisy fuels scoffers; integrity silences them (1 Peter 2:12).

3. Speak Truth with Grace

• “Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt” (Colossians 4:6).

• Correct error firmly yet respectfully (2 Titus 2:24–25).

4. Trust God’s Justice

• “Vengeance is Mine; I will repay” (Romans 12:19).

Psalm 74 ends in confidence that God will act; we rest in that same assurance.

5. Keep the Gospel Central

• The ultimate answer to reviling is the cross, where Christ bore reproach (Hebrews 13:13).

• Offer mockers the hope of repentance and forgiveness (Acts 3:19).

New Testament Echoes

1 Peter 3:15–16 pairs honoring Christ with “gentleness and respect.”

Romans 12:21: “Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

Matthew 5:11–12 reminds us that insults for His name’s sake bring blessing.

Living It Out

• Start each day asking God to guard His name through your words and actions.

• When ridicule arises, pause to echo Asaph’s cry, then respond with Spirit-led words.

• Hold fast to the certainty that God will ultimately silence every mocker and display His glory (Philippians 2:10–11).
